***Military Care Package - Official Thread***

Hello Everyone! We are starting this thread after being approached by Mike (stretched06) the other day with a nice idea. He derserves all the credit for this thread.

Since being on this great site for over three years now, I have noticed that many of our members and many of their family members have served, or are currently serving this great country of ours. While it's true that I have never served in the military, I consider myself very patriotic, and am proud of each and every man and women whom have given so much to keep us protected both here and abroad.

Mike had asked me about starting a thread where we could come to find out how we could give back by sending Care Packages to either service men or women we have in our families, and more importantly, service men and women who have little or no family back home and receive little or no parcels from home.

This is totally voluntary, and no one is obligated to participate. Now, while this is new to me and I never knew they had these programs, I have read up on some links that Mike had sent me. and have found out that there are several ways to send items.

A couple of ground rules though to keep things private. We don't want to enable others outside of our site to see the addresses of family members abroad, so if we post that we have a family member in the service and someone else would like to send that person a package, it would be better to PM the person in order to get the address privately. Mike has said that some unsavory people have gotten addresses from sites like this and have run scams on some of the Military people through letters.

We also don't want to list any Facebook Pages of any of our service men or women to respect their privacy.

Now as I have said, this is new to me and I'll probably learn more about it as we post up on the thread. We are willing to make changes as we get input from other members, and if you do know any other ways to accomplish what we want to do, please feel free to give your input.

The page that I have been reading up on is AnySoldier.com

If anyone has ideas that we can incorporate into the thread, please feel free to do so, such as other sites that offer this kind of service, etc.

I'd like to thank Mike for bringing this to my attention. Any credit for this shall go to him. I'll be making this a "Sticky" so it will always be readily available. I think the best way to get started is to just jump in and offer tips or advice. Thanks for looking, and God Bless Our Service Men And Women!

Very nice Billy. It may have been my idea, but you did all the work so I am only willing to take half credit.
I will try to start this off.
My brother Matt is serving at a fob in Afghanistan. They are from Fort Drum.
We take good care of our soldier so he does not need any thing. If someone from the forum would like to send a package to him for someone that has not recived any mail or to share with as many as possable he would be glad to do so.
just give me a pm.
Since I want to support this I would like the first member with a loved one over seas that is willing to share please pm me a name and address so I can send a care package to them.
Thanks for the help Billy.

If it wasn't for you Mike, bringing this to my attention, I would have never known that anything like this even existed. I wished I had known about this sooner. I for one will be sending you a PM in order to send out a package to your brother which he can hand over to someone he knows that doesn't receive much from home.

Done. just include a note telling him what you would like him to do with it.

I get the box and the form at the post office. Its the APO/FPO flat rate box. The form is
Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note. It only take a few minutes to fill out.
The box in the pic is the largest they have and is $14.95 to ship.

RE:

Gentlemen
I must say thanks for the generous offer and support for the troops overseas.
You all rock!
With that said I must share some tips and pointers that I have personally experienced while serving 3 tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.
A lot of people do not know what to send and a lot of stuff is thrown away due to not being needed, required, practical or simply wanted. So to make sure your gifts are appreciated and utilized I threw in some tips.

Some suggested item to send:
1) Baby wipes (These were my #1 favorite item)
2) Magazines or Books
3) Canned goods like Tuna or Chicken (High protein)
4) Beef Jerky
5) Cheap Tooth Brushes (For Hygiene and cleaning)
6) Girl Scout Cookies (These are extremely hard to get)
7) Energy Bars
8) Protein Powder. (A BIG item overseas)
9) Q-Tips (For Personel Hygiene and for cleaning weapons)
10) Candy; Preferably candy that doesn't melt.
11) Gold Bond; Foot or Body Powder.

Items not to send:
1) Porn (Banned in Country)
2) Chocolate (Many many many times we found melted chocolate in the boxes)
3) Alcohol (Banned)
4) DVD's (Your call but you can get movies for $1 each overseas)
5) High Dollar Items (Many boxes mysteriously disappear)
6) Laundry Detergent (Laundry is usually provided)
7) Regular Sunglasses (Must meet requirements and be shatter proof)
8) Batteries; They are readily available, and if the boxes sit for a while the heat will kill them.

Also mark on the box "For lower Enlisted only" It helps that when written on the box that it helps get to a soldier who really needs or who cannot afford basic items.

Hows is everyone doing? I am ready to send out a package and would like this one to go to a member, family, or a friend of someone on this great forum.
Please pm me with the info so I can get the package on its way.
Thanks!

You should avoid prohibited items such as drugs, alcohol, aerosols, etc., there are many things you need to know about to deliver the most suitable care packages. We will provide information on military care packages rules as well as suggestions on items you should include.
