will r1 exhaust fit

Hi all
new to site so hello
I got an 06 gen 2 a month ago as i need to do a lot of commuting now at sensible speeds ,was a bit boring so have done the fce, modded flies, modded airbox, bmc filter,de cat exhaust, pcIII,and down a tooth on the front sprocket, the difference is like night and day
I did read somewhere that u can fit a 04 r1 exhaust ,with link pipe mods but allas i cant fined the post now ,any one know if the 02/03 front pipes fit ?? as i know of a akrapovic system for sale very cheep, any help appreciated ......Mac

With the amount of slip-ons that are out there for this bike I'm not sure trying to fit an exhaust from an R1 is the way to go. I would imagine that the '04 R1 exhaust will physically bolt to the head of the FZ1 since they share engine cases and cylinder heads. I doubt the 02-03 exhaust will bolt on, but maybe the exhaust port dimensions didn't change between those tow generation of R1s. I still say that the trouble that you're going to go through wont be worth in in the end...

I have not ever seen that article and "technically speaking" - you can MAKE any pieces of metal fit together. However, I am not sure that it will provide optimal exhaust for your FZ1 engine. With the number of options out there for exhausts - I think you can find a nice system designed for the FZ1.

However, if you are bent toward doing this project (LOL - and I have taken on worse in my time ;) ). Here is a very short explanation of what your getting into.....with the R6 thrown in for good measure. LOL Hell - I SERIOUSLY looked at "Making" a Micron GP Serpent slip on fit my Gen 1. In the end - I wasn't sure that it would help the engine's performance. I did really "want it" so I understand what you are going through.
For what it's worth:
C/P

"The '04-'06 R1 Titanium headers and collector (with the CAT removed) will fit the GENII. After that - CAT, intermediate pipes, mufflers - its a no-go. The R1 swingarm & shock assembly is completely different than the FZ1. Spaced to permit the exhaust pipe to fit between the rear wheel and shock. Sorry - easier to buy an R1. The '07 & later R1 is a slightly different engine casting and the headers will not work with the GENII.

The R6 is completely different (4 into 2) and would not otherwise work properly as it is designed to flow/restrict a 600 rather than liter.

Possible to make a muffler to fit onto the R1 headers and collector (will save about 8 lbs +muffler weight difference) but who's got the mojo?"

,just sold my superduke as i was getting into trouble with the law,
so got the fz1 ,thing is its easy to drive slow for commuting, where the duke wasn't,but i do like to thrash it when i get a chance,
i have a chance of a full ti akrapovic system for a 02-03 r1 for $300
just trying to see if it will fit to the head and clear the sump, cant see it being any worse than the standard front pipes on the fz ,and it is ti bling bling

hey guys while you are on the subject can any of you tell me if a r1 (year???) exhaust header will bolt up to the head on my 02 fz1. i cant find one anywhere but there ar r1s all over the place!! thanx a bunch!!

I have seen a couple of bikes on the other forum that have retrofitted 04-06 R1 headers. The advantage with the R1 headers are they are titanium instead of stainless, the downside is the real gains to be made on the FZ1 is in the length of the mid-pipe where 2 goes into 1. I am looking at altering the stock FZ1 headers ATM and retrofitting my MIVV to create hopefully an underslung system similar to the Graves but with the nice mid-range gains. 04-06 R1 headers can be had cheap off fleebay this is an option i was considering.

so what years do you know of that will be the same o.d. to bolt up to the head on my 02 fz1? i put the motor in my quad so i will be cutting all the pipes after they turn down and fabbing up from there due to limited space.

I'd guess the header will fit but the pipe is too short for the FZ1 mounting points. You'd most likely need to fab a bracket up. There is only one way to know for sure, pony up the cash and let us know.

I've got to ask because I just don't see it: :confused0024:

What's the big attraction about putting an R1 exhaust on your FZ1?

All the exhaust does is get rid of the engine's gasses. There are PLENTY of good systems that will do that built specifically for the FZ1. A few minutes of work and you have a badass sounding machine that dropped a BUNCH of weight.
Now the $300 is EXTREMELY attractive. I do get that. In fact - there is a part of me that says "Grab it - FAST". Then you have the parts and you can start putting it together. See if it fits and make judgments as to what it would take to make it fit. If it looks too expensive or too difficult - just sell the Ak system for more than you bought it.....everyone wins.

well i do have a problem
,i cant help myself ,
every bike i get i streetfighter ,like the bandit i built1216 kit with zx10 swing arm,r1 tail sp1 clocks etc,or my old gsxr750-1216,the 2 bikes were in the same issue of streetfighter mag'
i just like to be different ,
and have u priced a full titanium system for a fz1 ,thy not cheep,
if u can point me in the direction of a full ti fz1 akra for 300 let me know asap, lol
but this wont help me to whether it will bolt up to the head ..??any one ,is the port spacing the same ,engine angel the same ???

I know where your coming from bro, i have the same problem !!!

For $300 it is worth the punt and even if you end up having the alter it will probably will be worth it & you will end up with a custom kick-ass titanium system we will be the envy of !!!:D

Okay so had a chance to read / skim through this... so here it is short and sweet... 2001-2005 models of FZ1 are all the same... 06-yada fkn yada are the same that's the break in the make. I believe 1998-2004 R1's and the FZ1 share the same exact block and mounting as well as porting... I believe the actual change in the shared motors began in 2005. The newer MT-10 and the New R1's for cost effectiveness and to regain some of the market have once again got back to sharing the power plants... minus some of the advanced electronics and tuning.

holeshot.com is a company that makes competition race systems for the original hyper naked bike first gen fz-1's it's gonna run you around $575 for the stainless header... around $1000 for the full system however you can get by with the headers only get a mid pipe with whatever muffler you choose to use match those they are quite universal to be honest this isn't rocket science afraid to say.

65% of people looking to do this are looking to do so just because they like to mod the bike. another 25% because they are looking for the performance increase for track purposes in a naked bike class which honestly has been dead since the late 20XX's especially outside of private club racing. They rest of people looking to do this are doing it for the reasoning most technicians, master mechanics, shop managers know as with any avid motorcycle enthusiast NO ONE AND I MEAN KNOW ONE buys a bike to leave stock... Most want more power, more performance more more more... the cheapest way buy a bigger, different bike designed towards what it is you want. For those whom can't and undergo the process I commend you and your pursuit for your vision of perfection. I have a 2003 FZ1 that I ride on the street, valve work up done, rods, pistons, porting, upgraded track tuned carbs, modified swing arm, track up graded forks, blah blah blah you get the idea... SO WHERE'S THE PROBLEM??? WHY DO WE WANT THE HEADERS??? WELL HERES THE ANSWER>>>

Everyone whom is ultra familiar with this bike knows the weak spot. You go adding performance to the engine you find out real quick you will go through the factory manifolds one after another after another every couple months. A factory defect is that with the increased performance... the welds around where the stainless meets the cast will break again and again and again... SO WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS???? Well here's the two correct and popular fixes that we use or have found.

1. Buy the holeshot.com competition headers and race system.
or
2. Take the exhaust off the bike and go to a muffler shop whom has exhaust experts they can cut the pipes weld in stainless pipe where the cuts are and then properly measure and angle the 4-1 or 4-2-1 collectors into the system and basically build a one off.. Now obviously being a certified master tech / mechanic for Victory, Polaris, Indian, H-D, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, and Triumph I have made a lot of friends in the business and industry over the year so I get special pricing from exhaust / muffler shops but on average here's what your looking at...

Holeshot.com competition 4-1 header system = $575 + Shipping + Tax = Grand Total probably between ( $625-$750 ) bucks.

or

Custom job by exhaust expert at a muffler shop = $450-$1000 bucks give or take depending upon your relationship with the professional and his skill and supplies etc... labor based on time.

Thanks have a great day everyone keep it rubber side down and between the white lines.

Quote from #4 above from one of my posts on FZ1oa:

Still have not had the time/mojo to fab an underslung muffler using the above.

Ha!

I stumbled on this thread trying to find my old research and thoughts from when I did this to my 2006 model. Here's some proof it can be done from my project back in 2010. I remember the titanium R1 header being considerably lighter than even the aftermarket stainless FZ1 offerings.

I even had the exup drive motor fitted.
