If you dont like the popping then block riff the AIS in the airbox. As fir running rich, when you start the bike cold, is there black-ish smoke coming from the exhaust? That's a sure way to see if you are running rich.

It's very common, plenty of threads on this. I'm in the UK and thankfully haven't got this problem.

What makes me think that it's linked is that while riding there is a strange noise which I think is coming from below the fuel tank. The noise does seem to stop at certain revs which leads me to think that different pressures in the fuel line straighten it...?
