Kerosene for me, cheap, effective and can be used for many other things. It doesn't hurt paint either. Use in a ventilated area to avoid a cheap high.
I use a small plastic tub and an old toothbrush (that you won't want to reuse for its original design) and put a piece of cardboard under the...
It's always been considered that even if the label didn't stress that before. Being in the trucking industry I know this. What is on the back label is the important part. Don't sweat it, I know lots of guys that use it in their bikes without issue.

Here's how Warren, my buddy with the 400 saw things.

Yep, that's me taking a header. Even with studs once you get the front...
Ice & Snow
Had fun with a friend's XR 250 & 400. Both have well studded tires and climb icy hills like they are dry flat pavement. The 400 is just 2nd or 3rd gear and up you go. The 250 (as I discovered) is 2nd gear and keep the revs up or you will power out on the steep stuff. 1st gear will...
ignore them
Especially as a new rider, it is better to just worry about your own ride, and being safe. You should always be aware of what other traffic is doing, but not allow their actions bait you into being irresponsible on the road. That rarely ends well for the person on two wheels...
Bead Breaker
With the welding skills of the mechanic at work and my design, the tire changer / bead breaker is done. I might add a stand at some point but for now it is complete and useable.
Stand with soft upper edge (5/8" heater hose) and bead breaker in place.
Heater hose covers...
Tire changer
I got a start on my "Ghetto" no cost tire change stand. I was getting a bit tired of laying the tires on the floor (on a folded tarp). With an old, scrap steel wheel, a push-rod from a scrap air brake chamber and large washer and two short pieces of steel rod, this came to be. With...
I think everyone that rides street should get out on a dirt bike at least once in a while. It really does teach you things about riding that make you better on the street. With the experience that your wife has on her current machine, I can only imagine that she will find it an absolute blast to...
Just remember; Brute force is not required. Don't force it, it should be easy. More lube if not and get a buddy (especially if your buddy is as pictured below) that has done it before to help you. Still talking about tires here.
It about technique not muscles. Note the knees on the tire...
Don't let that beat you, practice with an old tire and tube, when you are bored or have nothing else better to do. It really could save your butt out on the trail one day.
Yep, I'll kneel on the upper part of a stiffer tire when needed. Stiff, low profile tires are tough.
If you were closer I'd be happy to help you with them. Videos are helpful, but showing someone, hands-on is much better.

This is a wheel with a Rim lock making it just slightly more difficult. Otherwise a decent video. He doesn't lube the inside edge...
Well damn, that sucks!
Just chalk it up to learning, and sometimes that costs money, been there, done that. At least it was in the shop and not off in the bush somewhere. Their are a lot more expensive mistakes that could have been made. A friend just crashed his brand new 690 forgetting about...
Not a clue on that one. I use the TKC-80 because so far I haven't found anything that works better for how and where I ride. Brand means nothing, the performance is all.
Piece by Piece
I'm getting impatient so I started the reassembly (I get bored easily). Still waiting for the new connector to finish this;
Two bare wires need the spade connectors, then the male side of the white plastic clip shown can be attached. After that the rest of the body panels...
Check that your battery connections are tight. A connection that is even slightly loose can blow a fuse.
Then look for wires that may have rubbed though the insulation and are causing a short. That will pop fuses as well.
The key is to lube the chain when it is hot, like stated above. Spray along the o-rings from the inside edges. Wipe the outside of the chain off ( lube does nothing on the outside of the links but collect dirt )and let the bike sit. At the days end. The lube stays where it is needed and makes...
Yes air up the tube so it holds its shape but is soft. Lube the bead including just inside the edge . You should be able to push the tire onto the rim without tools, the first side anyway. If not you didn't lube well enough.
Then line up the valve stem and work the tube into the tire all the...
It is a Mitas E-09 80/90/ 21". and has about 10,000 kms on it. I was looking for a cheaper alternative last year when Continentals were more expensive. It was a failed experiment, as the 80 sidewall is too short for off-roading, making for too many rim hits on rocks. I was glad to get it off and...
