Big difference for me too.
No matter how much I adjusted the linkage, there was just enough slack that i had to almost lift my foot slightly off the peg for fast/firm shifts in full tuck.
the more comfortable your on the bike the better it will handle...IMO.
I have a gen1 and went up 1 with a fatty adapter and almost 2 more with some Magura fatty bars with a super bike sweep. I then went 1 back by rotating the oem risers.
Perfect for my short arms, and I'm still in a forward...
I have a 1st gen VMAX...would not recomend as a 2 up cruiser...its a pure bred hotrod, and you'll be riding it as hard as your FZ....plus you will only take so much from the stock seat.
Plus, if you get one stock...you have to upgrade the suspension right away to ride 2 up.

I bought one of those from that site for the $180...they were new and cheapest NEW around.
You do not need the fairing c/cowl to run the headlights...just the bracket/stay...I run...

All my bikes are jetted, and they won't full choke start down here...1/4 or 1/2 choke is all that's needed.
If the brass cover is still there, it wasn't jetted, those cover the mixture screws.

oil level sensor is in the front...just like my vmax and my xj550.
if not topped off they become irritating.
I used to use castrol 4t 20-50 and it was fine....I switched to rotela t since I also use it in my Vmax.....and started to burn a bit.....so does my max.
Happy with the oil though so never changed.

I have a 02 also, with 13,000 miles, and I burn a bit of oil after about 2000 pretty hard miles.
Just enough to let the oil light come on....under acceleration.

Weight and bike setup dictates a lot of the proper tire pressure for me.
I'm 215...and have run the Diablo Rossi/Corsas only on my FZ. They are not overly sticky, but do the job.
Suspension stock.......set at max, and tires are factory recommended or 1-2 lbs over .......usually 36/42...
The gearing commander site is good, but you just won't know until you ride it.
