Alexander from the Netherlands, 40 year old, father of 2 daughters.

Big Petrolhead in cars, mostly the french hothatches (Peugeot 106 Rallye, 206 XS and in the end a 205 GTI engineswapped tracktool, which I used for various racetracks including the Nurburgring :))

- Passed my Bike license exam in november '22
- First Bike in Jan '24 (BMW F800ST) after a year of renting stuff for a day or two in 2023.
- Rode it for over 6000 kilometers in 2024 (just fun rides, no commuting)
- Sold it in May '25 and got the FZ1 the day after
- Haven't looked back :)

The specs;
- '08 FZ1S (ABS)
- Red/Black with the black wheels / gold forks
- I am 2nd owner
- 32K kilometers (sooooo 20K ish miles?)

Enjoying the 4cilinder and the power and rideability it provides.
Had a lot of fun with the Beamer (up untill trivial stuff was breaking and BMW-parts tax came into place) and it taught me how to ride in the real world.

Congratulations on getting the FZ1. Your old BMW looked nice too, but that FZ1 is way nicer. :D
Thanks, it was a peculiar bike. Belt driven, instead of a chain or cardan, it was a parallel twin (very un-BMW) and it was fitted as standard with ABS, On board Computer, heated grips and a 6 speed. It also was used as a winter bike (with the belt drive, a hassle free excercise) but it meant a lot of pitting on the forks (and busted seals) and rusted bolts in combination with overengineerd german things, meaning maintenance was a pain in the ass when it was due because of bolts snapping... A very forgiving bike, with some 86horses a good and easy to ride machine, but also something I got used to pretty quickly...

The seat though.... not sure if it was the germans overengineering, or Yamaha's lack of padding for larger europeans, but that BMW seat was MILES better on long rides... then again the vibration of the parallel twin made my arms go numb... as far as the looks, pretty similar to the FZ1 in regards of "not looking their age". The BMW was an early production one, 2006 built, but designwise aged very well. Frequent detailing did help with the overall look of things :)
 
Looking good! I always loved these in red, my first one was red. Pictures don't do the color justice, it's more like a red candy over gold than just red.

Couple of mods to these things can really wake them up and make them a monster. So if you ever feel you've grown out of it as the years go by, keep that in mind.
 
I was going to ask why you got rid of that BMW but then I read your post in more detail. It's a very nice looking bike for sure, but definitely has some BMW quirks; that left side exhaust and belt drive single sided swingarm...

Most of the Euro manufacturers were doing quirky things with their bikes in the early 2000s, I had an oddball KTM, Ducati had weird designs (early Multistrada didn't age well!) but the body and overall style lines of that F800ST still look great.

Love that red Gen II FZ1! I thought about upgrading to a Gen II but I'm past that point now.
 
Just spoke to a shop on the other side of the country. Now i'll have to dig out the ecu from the crevices of the frame ;) and send it there.

Going for a Fuel cut elemination, remove restrictions in 1st/2nd/3rd and EXUP warning deletion (have none now, but still looking into non-exup cans)

Good luck! If I remember right, it's a chore, but not real bad. You'll be happy to have those things done to it.
 
Received the ECU back, a couple of days ago, placed and connected and buttoned up the FZ1 :)

So in the end;

- Fuel cut under decel removed
- removed limit in 1-2-3 gear
- AIS removal
- Fan kicks in sooner (95C instead of 101C, shutdown at 89C instead of 93C).

All in all subtle changes, which add up to more riding pleaser. Pickup is smooth, shifts are slightly smoother, and top-end power in 2 and 3 is pretty impressive. Seems to run slightly cooler as well, so that could be a plus. Can't tell a lot about fuel consumption as the testing I did yesterday evening was a lot more "whiskey throttle" / power runs in regards to my normal riding ;)

My advice is not to worry about fuel consumption and just enjoy the bike. :) I only check my consumption rate once in a while out of curiosity's sake. It's usually right around 33 mpg. That's with a combination of sane riding and spirited riding. :)

can confirm its moslty thesame, burnt through 12 liter (full to blinking indicator) in about 150ish km... but as stated, getting the most out of the ECU, and testing all paramaters (can confirm top speed is slightly higher aswell, clocked 259kph - 160mph)

Sounds about right. They weren't built for economy, I don't think. They were built for fun. :D I'm glad you are getting the most out of the ECU. I don't know the top speed of my bike. The fastest I've had it is 143 mph (speedo is corrected with a SpeedoHealer). It was still gaining, so I know the top speed is up there. :D
