Hey all. I got a new chain and sprockets. I will be attempting to use a rivet type master link that came with the kit. I am fairly mechanically inclined though I have never done this before.
My question is should I do this or should I should I try to order a snap on clip type master link? Also, does anyone know a good tool I can get to get this done? Thanks guys!

Forget clip type chain links. Not for this bike or any other liter sized beast. You want a rivet type deal so it stays put. If it's something your gonna do yourself from now on, do a search for the Motion Pro Chain Tool. It's the one I use and it works beautifully. Buy it once and be able to do your chain like a breeze. Don't skimp because the crappy cheap chain tools always break in the middle of the procedure. Ask me how I know! :waiting:

YZFriderNY, thanks man. I guess I better pony up some loot. How would I make sure I don't over tighten the rivet? Match the thickness of the total link against the existing links or use a feeler gauge as I tighten. I have seen all types of you tube videos. What do you like to do.
Thanks in advance.
Also, I agree that the clip type seems cheesy for a FZ1. Lots of juice on that chain.

i got a few spacers with some of my chains over the years and i tend to use them to keep me from over riveting them.

the spacers are on the left.

Okay, since my RK RX-ring chain didn't come with spacers I will try and see if I can find the proper spacer or at least thickness. Thanks guys. It will probably be a couple weeks until I do this work and I will let you know how it goes.

This is an exerp from my YZF Restoration Thread. It's when I did my chain with the tool I mentioned to you. I should have done a video. Maybe next time I need to change it. For now, check it out...........................

Once finished with that I broke out the new RK 530 X-Ring Chain and ran it around the sprockets. I set up the new Motion Pro Chain Tool for the first time and it worked flawlessly.

New link in place and ready for the plate to be pressed on.

I lined up the tool with the "P" in line with the word "Press"

It's clamped onto the chain with the new plate in place.

It gets torqued down with a 17MM wrench until the rivets come all the way through.

Now you change the bottom block so that the "R" is in line with "Rivet" and insert the "square" die up top. This will sqaure off the rivet to match all the other rivets on the chain.

Now it's just a matter of tightening down on the tool.

New chain installed. On to the next thing!

Dude, that is great!! Seems like the way to go. Looked up the tool and probably buy it tomorrow. One last ??. Does the tool have different dyes for different size chains or do all chains use the same size. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

The tool isn't specifically for the 530 chain. I'd have to read the booklet that came with it but I remember seeing that it will do more than one size chain.

dang, thats a nice chain tool. i bought an RK version years ago. it has a nipple that goes into the recessed hole on the end of the rivet link. it mushrooms the outside of the rivet over the link.

this would be too much mushrooming, you can see it cracked

Billy, as much as I love your videos, this one isn't necessary unless you just want me to hear that sexy voice of yours :D

I refer to this one before I rivet my chain. I have the cycle gear tool that I got when they were only $30. same basic principle. I've used it three times without any failures.

Awesome info guys. I should be doing this in the near future. Any ideas on what is better? The motion pro with the mushroom effect or the rk type with the flair? I know so many questions from me or do you think it matters? The rk website was less than helpful. Thanks again guys.

Either design works, the square or the round. As along as you don't over-do either design your okay. I liked the square cause my RK Chain has that pattern on their links. It has no bearing on the way it holds.

I also use the CG Stockton tool.

For peace of mind, you can note where the tool handle is (eg 6 oclock), take it off and make sure that the lik isnt too tight and bound up. If still loose, give it a bit more twist.

Hey guys! Thanks to your help I successfully put on a new chain and sprockets today and riveted the master link. First time for the riveting. I used a motion pro PBR. It was easy thanks to your help! I didn't get a chance to ride today, but hope for a good test ride tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help.

My dog gave a hand too....

Oh yeah, I had just riveted it. Still had some covers to put on and chain to adjust. Anyone have chain cleaning tips? Since I started using wax I have had a hell of a time trying to clean my chain.
