Dying on start up

Today I stopped to refuel my bike. Topped it off with 93 octane and it only needed 2.5 gallons.
Tried starting my bike up and it started for a second or 2 then it died. Tried again was able to rev the engine up a bit but as soon as I let off the throttle it died again.
Did this a couple more times. Cut the bike off, removed the key, waited 2 minutes at the most. Started it back up and it's ran fine since.
Needless to say we cancelled the ride we had planned and headed home. About a 30min ride. No more problems.
Anyways, planning on a long trip in a few weeks and wanted to hear from you guys on ideas or recommendations.
I ride a 2006 Yamaha FZ1 with 14,700 miles on it. Recently in the past few months changed oil and coolant.
Thanks guys
