New to me 02 fz1 with aftermarket sprockets

Hello everyone! I got an 02 fz1 yamaha blue that I'm absolutely loving so far. I was looking over the bike, and discovered it had a 45t rear vortex on it. I can't seem to be able to tell which front it has on it though. The bike accelerates very quickly, and my speedo is reading way faster than I'm actually going. The stock gearing for this gen 1 bike are 16/44 right? Is there any way to tell which front gear the last owner put on? Can we use a speedo healer on these bikes because it's way off. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the club. You can take the front sprocket cover off (4 or 5 bolts) and count the teeth. Requires first removing the shift linkage. Takes all of 10 minutes.

Speedo healers work on Gen 1s.

16/44 = stock

If you like your current set up then it’s just a question of healer or not. I like stock gearing and 50 mpg. Your results will likely differ.

Thank you for the response! Yeah I like the current setup, just wanted to know if the went down a tooth in the front or not. I'll look into the speedo healer. So far this bike is awesome. I had an fz6 years ago that I loved, this is an upgrade for sure. Last bike was an sv1000s but this seems fz1 seems to have quite a bit more torq.

I should have said count the valleys not teeth.

I don't think it matters much. I count the teeth. Never a problem.
Might be easier to count the valleys in some instances, I suppose.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I can get used to the speedo bring off, but I am commuting on freeway daily and freeway speeds have me running at a constant 5-6 grand. That's not considered too high for this beast right?

If you look at Pat's Motorcycle Page he recommends 15/47 gearing, which is really short. Won't hurt anything and sure makes for great roll on acceleration, but too buzzy for most I suspect.

Yep, I run a 16 front, and a gen. 2, 45 tooth rear on my ex Pat Glenn, 01 FZ1. Currently up in Hillsboro, Oregon on a sport tour, on said bike.
The speedo is slightly off, but I do not care. Bike continues to run great.
When I picked up the bike from Pat in 2017, it did indeed, come with 15/47 gearing. Waaaaay too low for me, as I tour on the bike, quite often.
My other FZ1, a 2002 model has 16/44 gearing. Either ratios work well, for my needs.
Here a few more days, then further up north I will go.
At 80 years of age, I have to do this nonsense, as often as possible! Lol!
