Another Stolen Day (From Old Man Winter)

November 7th, not a record around here but unusual none the less. One of our famous "Chinooks" brought wind and with it warmth along the eastern edge of the Front Range. The temperature shot up for the day, making for a comfortable and glorious day for another ride.

Cabin Fever

"Time to break away from my condition
Rejoin the human race, see what I'm missing
Try to face the day, my private passion
Is eating me away"

Yesterday, January 23rd my buddy Warren & I took his XR 400 north of Calgary to the Waiprous staging area to experiment with his screw-studded tires. He used about $40.00 worth of screw in studs on his dirt knobbies and we went for a bit of experimenting. It was the first time riding snow off-road for both of us (at least on purpose) and we had a blast. There were no crashes although we both had close calls, finding that there were not enough screws in the front tire so you could not lean over very far.

Warren took a trail that dropped him into a deep little valley and ripped most of the rear studs out getting back out. The last few runs after that had very little rear traction, but we managed. The bike was cleaner after the outing than before. This winter riding thing might be addictive.

We checked out what the other riders were using for studs and learned a few things. If money is no object there are some great products out there for studding tires, that don't tear out so easily.
