R1 forks vs. ...

I spoke to a well known Canadian suspension specialist and asked which were better as a foundation for him to work on...my 04 R1 forks or my 09 FZ1 forks.
The R1, since they have more adjust-ability vs. the FZ forks.
Guess which ones I am having re-built and modded? ;)

Hello Martin,

The R1 forks are a far better fork with adjustable compression, rebound and preload. I assume you have looked into the logistics of mounting these forks into your bike? Triple clamps, calipers, wheel spacing overall length etc etc? Can you bring us the bike for our labour, or would you just be sending us your forks?

Thank you Martin,

John.

R1 by a mile, or 2, or 3, or 4, well you get the picture.

Or... just go Ohlins, if you plan to keep the bike.

R1 forks, and the accompanying R1 brakes are perhaps the best bang for the buck. They really transform the bike.

Heck, you could sell the FZ1 legs to the FZ8 jokers. They think the FZ1 suspension is the bomb. You might even net to zero. :sinister:

I found the best three mods on the FZ1 to be; Penske shock, R1 Forks/Brakes, Flash. Okay, a real saddle. So four. Totally different bike.

Yeah Ohlins is not in the budget, and likely not a penske either.
I'd probably throw the fz suspension on the wifeys 8...

Has anyone done a spring upgrade then done R1 forks? Is it really that big of a difference?
I can get springs and a brand new R1 shock for the rear for less than I can get a set of used forks... Withoutbrakes etc.

I love my R1 forks. They work great on an FZ1 and being 12-15mm shorter than FZ forks, they also help with faster turn in.

My 2008 R1 forks combined with my 8983 Penske shock = one pretty awesome handling FZ1.

The parts I used were 2008 R1 forks and 6 pot brakes , master cylinder from 2005+ R6 or 2004+R1, 2008 R1 axle and 2008 R1 rotors.

So what year forks are capatable. I'm planning on doing the 08 rear shock if I can figure out how to get an adapter from satan666 I beleive his names is. If I do the rear shock I'm deff gonna want to do the forks.:sinister:

I did the '04 forks IIRC instead of the later ones as I did want to mod for the 6 pot calipers. The 4 pots bolt right up.

I'm 175 in my birthday suit and found the R1 spring rate fine for the street.

It is a much more supple fork and the brakes 4 or 6 pot, are outstanding.

I cannot compare but I did buy the springs and heavier oil... This method is a band-aid fix for stability and brake-dive and works OK but I have to believe the R1 forks are a crap-ton better. If you can swing it, go with the R1 setup.

Speaking of which, for the Gen II, is there a chart showing what year R1 forks bolt on? What year R1 setup requires more than just bolt-on?

I was thinking of getting progressive rate springs, different valves and a total overhaul. I get aftermarket stuff for a pretty outstanding rate..

Our rebound fork isn't all that bad. The dampening fork is what blows. Traxxion Dynamics has a way to reverse the rebound valve, shim the stack and mount it for dampening which works quite well I'm told. I have no idea what that costs but they can also put in the progressive springs too. ;)

Under $600...
I don't think there is any fancy trick to what they do, just a matter of knowing what's going on in the fork.
I work with a guy that's pretty good with that crap I'll see what we can do. For the price traxxion wants I could buy the whole R1 assembly.
