upshift problem

Can anyone please tell me what angle to put the shift arm on , guy put new front sprocket on and removed it for some reason and stuffed it up
and i just cannot get it right place as their is no notch on the spline to line everything up . what i am getting is crap upshifts where i have to bend foot right up on every change . can you get longer shift rods for a fz1 gen 2 (mines done 84000 miles and its not smoking at all or leaking) Ive tried everything from new boots to gear selector rubbers and new pegs but it is now making my bike unpleasanr to ride
 
I know nothing of Gen 2s

On Gen 1s You just have to pull the heim joint back off the splines and rotate it one tooth in the direction that lowers the shifter, If that doesn’t work the shift arm should be adjustable at least it is on Gen 1. In fact I think the Gen 1 is adjustable at both ends of shift shaft.

After checking fiche it looks like Gen 2 is same. Lock nuts number 18 and 19 on either end of shift shaft 17 allow for adjustment. On Gen 1s there’s a slot on shaft 17 to use a #10 wrench to hold it while loosening number 19.

You’ll have to expreiment on which way adjusts it (Item 20) in the direction you need. My guess is rotating number 20 clockwise will shorten the shaft and lower the shift lever.
I said Item 20 but in reality I leave 13,14,20,21 and 22 all together as an assembly and rotate assy on shaft for adjustment.

I could have it ass backwards as far a rotation goes.

Ideally item 13 should be close to 90 degrees orientation with shaft 17 when every thing is installed and adjusted.

Study the fishe, Dig in, experiment, learn about your bike.


One last comment: If you lloosen the two lock nuts 18&19 with out touching anything else you should be able to turn the shaft 17with 10mm wrench to lengthen or shorten shaft. Sometimes there isn’t access to both nuts.

Thank you for the reply , the problem is there is no mark (dot) on the selector shaft that i can see just a faint mark wich could be anything
if it had the dot like most other bikes ive ever had it probably would have been fettled now , Ive moved the shift arm about a few times
but no joy ive done the 90 degree thing but that just totally screws up the angle of the selector lever . My down shifts are fine (if a bit clonky at times) but the upshifts are annoying i am almost having to try and bend my foot up 45 degrees . Basicly I am trying to adjust it on the shaft like you do but it just screws everthing else up I can put it in the position i usualy have it and its crap or muck about and (well you get it) the local mech says just lower the lever but that feels totally unatural and is not much better . Its a pity as this bikes done 84000 miles and goes good (never gets screwed) but this upshift thing and the occasional clunk or grind into fiirst (wich is a thing with these anyways) is spoiling things . If i could only get the shift arm right or find a shift shaft for a gen 2 with a few more threads on it . Ive even tried the washer trick on the foot rest . Much more of this and i think i will get the charging system sorted on my Blackbird instead
 
Have you considered adding a dot with a punch or a paint pen? With a paint pen you can often brakekleen it off after. With the splines as major adjustment and the shaft as minor adjustment you should be able to put the lever in any position.
 
Well ive had another tonkle . I took everything off including the footpeg assembly cleaned it all etc . did other things like lubricate and adjust clutch cable (used a cable oiler) took the front sprocket cover offf cleaned and degreased around that area then adjusted chain .
cant say ive fixed much in the way of the upshift as such but it is smoother and a bit better so thats liveable with
 
If it was good before new sprocket you should be able to get ti back to comfortable. I wouldn’t get hung up on the Dot being missing.

Fixed it this morning when out , I moved the shift arm 2 splines to clockwise and lowered shift lever right down

Find a mechanic who knows what they're doing...
 
I can't find a factory angle or elevation for the shift pedal. Typically this is adjusted to personal preference. The "right spot" varies from rider to rider. Here is a picture of my geometry. The arm of the lever appears level to the ground and this works for my height, boot size, and riding position. Good luck with your adjusting.

I would say turn the adjuster rod to about the middle of the adjustment range, then set the splined fitting so the the shift lever is where chamolm has his. Then use the adjuster to fine tune. turning the adjuster visibly moves the shift lever. Should be easy.

One basic rule that I try to go by any time I take something apart. Get a before picture so that you can remember what it looked like before you started. I take pics through most big steps as I go so I can retrace where I've been and maybe catch errors along the way....
 
The shifter rod should be set to 90 degrees at both the shift lever and the are on the shift shaft. This gives the best mechanical leverage to make the shifting the easiest.

The photo in post #9 of this thread shows this very well.
