I’ve been seeing in forums that Yamaha now recommends 20-50 instead of 10-40 on fz1’s?
I wonder if that would help with the somewhat load engine noise that the gen 2 has?

These old FZs have millions of miles on them now with virtually zero reports of lubrication issues. Even if the recommendation was changed, real world data proves that the old stuff is still perfectly fine. Personally I've used 15w-40 Rotella T4 in my two FZ1s along with nearly all my old dirt bikes, never had any oil related problems.

Yeah, sounds about right after all these years. Occasionally, I get some fairly loud chain rattle. Even after a fresh oil change with mobile 1 10-40 4T. Also occasional difficulty getting into 1st and finding neutral. Purchased this 2007 2nd gen with about 12k and now has approx 15,xxx.

Sounds like more of a chain maintenance / clutch lever adj. issue than oil.

I’d turn this into another chain lube thread but we have one going .

As others have said viscosity can vary without negative impact. I use Mobil 1 15-50 in the Gen 1 and used Rotella before that. I suspect my Gen 1 would run well on dirty ground water if there were no other alternative.

I don't think Gee3po was referring to anything other than cam chain noise. Drive chain noise is a whole other issue.

Just my 2cts. I run Mobil 1 15/50 full syn. in my 2001 gen. 1. Change said oil every 4 thousand miles, with filter change every other oil change. Bike seems to be fine, with 60K miles on it.
Now the ol' 2002 gen.1 wreck, with 131K miles on it, has only seen 20/50 oil on sale at the local auto parts store from new! Lol! Name brand oil, that I change every 2 thousand miles. The device continues to function perfectly. Riding around town, or short rides it hardly uses any oil. If I hammer it, like I did two weeks ago, on a 900 mile sport tour ride up north, then it will use oil. Funny thing is, guys behind me, never see any smoke from the bike? Anyway, this device runs fine.
You all have a great day, now.

Yes, I was referring to cam chain noise. Almost out of adjustment up at the clutch lever. Shouldn’t need a clutch at 15k but who knows how the previous owner treated the bike?
