A long while ago, I used to run michelin pilot power 2CTs (120/70-17 front & 180/55-17 rear) on my R1’s I had. I wouldn’t use anything else. (I tried Pirellis once and couldn’t stand them. I think I tried Dunlop Q2s and they were okay)

Well I needed to replace my tires on my ‘09 FZ1-S, so I went with the PP2CTs again.

However, I forgot what pressures I used to run on my R1’s. Any thoughts on some starting pressures to run on the FZ1? I swear I used to run 32F/28R but something tells me that is too low.

I did see a post here from 2008 that said 36F/36F and Michelin says on their site to run factory pressures which is like 38F/42R. No way am I running that high of pressures.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Mat

Manufacturers specs are always a good starting point and what I've used on all my bikes for decades.
Only variance is as jwarden posted for FJR1300 as the Yamaha recommended 36psi front is far too low and kills any brand tire on that heavy motorbike. Common knowledge on the FJR is 40psi front minimum for tire life, wear and handling.

Thanks all. When I get them put on today I’ll set them at 40F/42R and see how it goes.

I’m just always paranoid about it being too high and low siding in a corner due to lack of grip. 🫤😢

But you all have ridden on the FZ1 way longer than I. I appreciate the info!

I run 36 front, and 39 rear on both of my gen.1's. About what the owners manual recommends. The high mileage bike runs Dunlop Roadsmart tires, and the low mileage bike, is currently on Michelin Road 6 tires. Now if I go on a long distance tour, I increase the rear pressure a few pounds, because of the extra weight on the rear tire.
After you have a tire changed, be sure to check the pressure the next day, as it will drop three or four pounds. I check my tire pressures and look at the tires before every ride. Just to see that nothing is lodged in said tires.
Going to change the oil in the old bike today. Fresh 20/50 dino oil for that one. 132K miles, and thats all it has ever seen.
The last thousand mile sport-tour I did two weeks ago, I took the ol' wreck, and it used just six ounces of oil! The thing still runs great, and pulls hard. Funny thing is, it never smokes! I smoke of course, hand rolled, Churchill sized cigars. Lol! That being said, I do not know where the oil is going. Perhaps past the valve guides? Not bad enough for me to tear the thing apart. I just carry some oil with me, on the tours.
Thats it for now. You all have great day now.
Adios

Glad I could help you.
I have been riding for 63 years! Still love it, my friend. First bike, a 1956 B.S.A. A10 650 c.c. vertical twin, Road Rocket.
"The older we get, the faster we use to be". Lol!
Good heavens!, look at the time here in central Ca., will you?
Getting close to hopped, malted, Tecate beverage time with a slice of fresh lime, and a Flor De Oliva Churchill sized cigar! Once again, life has meaning! Lol!
Adios, one and all here.

Sitting here in GA drinking a Stone IPA from out your way.

Ah ha. If memory serves me correct, that is a brewery in San Diego, Ca. Have a lady friend, that likes that companies beverages.
That being said, a friend just gave me a few days ago, a can of "Lagunitas", 'Little Sumpin' IPA from Petaluma, Ca. 7.5% ABV
Bit stronger than I normally consume, but I think it will be drinkable, one hopes. Lol!
Had beer and a cigar this afternoon, so no beer/cigars til Thursday/Friday. Have to keep this stuff down, to a dull roar at my advanced age! Lol!
Do have a great tomorrow.
P.S. Breakfast with the lads tomorrow in the Aptos Hills, on two wheels. Should be a perfect day for a ride.

I agree. Seems to work for me. As mentioned, on a long tour with rear luggage, i up the rear tire pressure, by two or three pounds.
Beautiful day today for a outdoor breakfast with pals, and then a nice ride, in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
I hope you all had a great day, also.

Usually manufacturers list maximum pressures. Pressures change with temp and aggressive/mellow riding styles. May I suggest that you go with your gut. Once you feel that your up to tempt, check the "warm" pressures. I follow the 10% increase method..

Thanks for the thoughts, terdog. That makes sense. I dropped them a bit and it feels better to me. :-) I'll check them next time they are warm and see what they show.

I'm a heavier rider, so I run the factory recommended pressures (cold). I've always seemed to have good grip and tire life. To be honest, I probably don't push it too hard in the corners compared to some of you. I go just fast enough to make it fun. :)

I live in northern Idaho about 60 miles south of canada. It does get a little cool up here. In colder Temps I will actually lower my tire pressures a little bit to get more heat into the Rubber and to get it stickier. I have even run Michelin Road 25 psi on the street and 20 psi on the track. Worked great!

So, found this interesting …ive ridden(on and off) for more decades than i want to admit 😜.. though im not what you call a knee dragger by any definition of the phrase i cant help but wonder and mention about the whole tire pressure suggestions … pressure for normal-ish riding with a average sized person should in my opinion at the very least ”start” at manufacturer suggested pressure…or within a few lbs allowance for personal experience ,size not being average and type of riding each person is inclined towards (sporty -cruising the highways daily)… ive never “track day’ed” and my extreme riding has many more days behind than in front of me now that my bike actually can scare me lol… so id say start at manufacturer suggested pressure and test it , slowly ! Meaning if you’re aggressive dont dive into a 180* apex trail braking at full lean. Hehe 😜 get a feel for it and adjust from there …make adjustments for your riding style more lbs if going for mileage , less if you need the grip upped…👍🏼✌️
