I have a 2004 fz1 that will only run with the starter plunger pulled, soon as I let it out it dies, if I have it pulled it will run from about 700-8k but in the upper end it backfires like crazy. Also runs like crap. I do believe it has bigger jets if that helps any

I wanna help but what is the back story? New bike to you? Miles? Has it ever ran in its current state? Mods? Why does it have bigger jets?

Call back to your other post.

Since it may have bigger jets your A/F screw is probably not set to factory. I’d rec resetting everything to factory or adjust the screws to what the gen1 guys rec for that size jet.

Like I said on the other post you may want to inspect electrical connections and grounds while your looking at it.

How long do you let it warm up on the Choke (starter plunger) before you disengage the Choke? Do you continue to let it idle and warm up before setting off?

I generally need 10-20 seconds of Choke when running on winter blend gas and 2-3 seconds when on Summer blend.

After that I need nearly 5 min of idle before I set out on winter blend for the bike to not stutter under throttle - about 1 min on summer blend.

I don't know if they have different blends where you live - but in California the gas is very different in the winter months and a Carbureted vehicle lets you know that.
