I read about 'air box mod' . . . can someone explain what to do AND if I do, what other mods I need to make. I don't like the way the bike runs (Gen II) and have been told to get Ivan's 'fuel' map system/etc. IF I stick w/the stock exhaust . . . other then the 'fuel map' mod, anything else I might want to do?

Take a look at this thread. Essentially, you're pulling the airbox out and cutting out the area beneath the air filter as seen in the photos. http://www.998cc.org/forum/gen-ii/5177-air-box-mod.html There's no need to do any further mods but see below. ;)

If you are running stock exhaust, there's not a lot you need to do.

What year is your bike? What is it that you do not like about the way it runs? Explain what you find troubling and we can better judge what you can do to try and fix it.

Is this your first EFI inline 4? What did you ride previously?

Look at my signature to see the mods I have done already. Based on your answers to these questions, we can point you in the right direction. :D

Join the party, no one like's the stock FZ. PC, air box, blocks, full system, k/n filter or the other one, lower bars; rizoma sets; good levers; dump the center stand; lose the fender, and Ivan's E map should make ya happy.

The above is assuming that you ride twisties a lot. I like the regular power tires.

It's a new '08 and this is my first EFI bike. The bike just doesn't run 'sharp' enough, w/poor throttle response/etc . . . more like a light switch. Make sense? Back when I was drag racing, in the early 80's, carb work was 'simple' . . . jet/needle changes would 'clean' this up. Guy's have posted getting Ivan's Performance stuff to change this, and while more HP is always welcome, I ain't racing anymore (even though I will take the bike to the drags this year and see what I can do and what speed the bike will run), I just want it running crisper/cleaner. I have no real need to change the exhaust . . .

Thanks.

What you describe is what we all know.

I forgot to mention that I have 17/48 sprockets. Some do 16/45, and others do different combinations.

I like increasing the rear to shorten the wheel base.

This will give more low end, lighten the front in the twists at slower speeds (tight twists).

Ok, I'd start slow and change one thing at a time.

After modding the airbox.....

First, since you are noticing the throttle response, either put in modified sub-throttle plates from Copperdog or Ivan (or mod your own) or, just remove the plates and let the spindle twist.

If that doesn't smooth it out for you as much as you want, drop a tooth in the front (should be done anyway) and see where you are for response.

I forgot to mention Ivan's plates: do those, too.

If you have the money, do everything now, while the weather is crappy. That's what I did last winter. Glad I did, because I enjoyed the hell out of this bike.

Helps you learn the bike from a different angle.
