Australia NSW insurance advice needed.

Hi All,

This might sound stupid to some but i want to ask abt something ive never done before.

Im currently insured with AAMI. 3rd party with fire and theft upto 8grand for $265 a year.

Im contemplating on upgrading to comprehensive (the wifes order). The quote goes, upto 10grand cover (1grand protective gear inclusive) with access fee of $400, for $1200 a year.

Me personally dont think its necessary. Ive only been riding for 4 years but never had to use any insurance. But will i need one down the track? Or am i playing with the fire here.

Id love to hear some stories about your engagement with the insurance company.

Does it actually help when it comes to motorcycle? Or are we paying whole heap of money for the false sense of security?

Cuz at this stage, at least to me, from what i've seen from many many club weekend rides.. It seems like the damage will be either less than the access fee OR the accident so massive you actually worry about the life of the rider not the bike. Or the bike being stolen, which im already covered for.

It is worth the extra $1000 a year?
Comments from any experienced riders wld be much appreciated!

J

I I can't give you any Australia specific advice but I can tell you that I carry a complete insurance policy on my bike and have made use of it once. I never used to carry more than basic insurance but when I had an 'at fault' accident at 10 kph, my policy covered my bike and Givi luggage. I was really glad to have the policy. The other benefits you have are obvious (fire, theft, etc) but there are other bonuses as well, such as roadside assistance.

I don't know what insurance is like in Australia but I found it worthwhile here in Canada. $1000 a year is a lot to add, though.

For what it's worth :)

Mate $1200 for full comp is BS.

I just did a quick online quote with Famous Insurance and full comp is $391 or $308 if you’re over 40, both at $500 excess for market value. This is not including gear but that can be added. Their market value is around $10k for an 08, i know this for a fact as my 08 is insured with them.

You can also get online quotes with Insure My Ride, Swann, Shannons etc. They all specialise in bike insurance and I'm sure would beat $1200 by miles.

I would not pay $1200, I think mine is $450 for market value with QBE [2008 FZ1s] But I am over 60yrs with an have a 60% no claim, Will be searching around again next time,I had a claim with QBE 7yrs ago and all went well,as you can see retained my no claim policy , I will have to check out Famous?

I'm also over 40 with a max no claim bonus and Famous insures my 2010 FZ1N and all it's mods for $14000 agreed value at a cost of $484 a year.

This is in South Western Sydney too. I can't complain about that.

Ring qbe and get a quote from them, make sure you find out the limit of riding gear included. Then go to insure my ride and plug in all the same info and get the quote number. Take that back to qbe. They'll match it. It'll be a lot less than $1200. I had one company quote me $5000. They simply didn't want to insure bikes.
