best gas to run in my fz1

What the manual recommends - seriously. If you have a tune on the ECU, run what the tuner set it up for. For example, mine has the Ivan's full setup, he tuned it for 89 octane. I've tried and have had to use everything from 87 to 93 (depending on circumstances), 89 works as it should. 93 gains me nothing but a lighter wallet.

None of the generations of the FZ1 were intended to run leaded fuel. Lead was used as a "lubricant" for valve seats. Once lead was phased out, hardened valve seats were used to eliminate the need for lead in the fuel. This was decades ago in the US. Other than certain race fuels (ridiculously expensive), leaded fuel isn't really available in the US. What would be the reason? Again, a stock bike should use whatever the engineers recommended. A modified bike should use whatever octane the mods required (builder or designer of engine/fueling mods).

Good that the OP has non ethanol options. In New England I’d have to go to an airport to find it for $$$. The only time I would use it (because I’m a cheap bastage) is for winter storage. My Gen 1 runs noticeably warmer on anything other than 87.

I used to run regular in my Gen1.Never had a problem. Now I run middle grade?? Why I dont know?? I guess in my mind the extra octane makes a difference, even know it doesn't unless your running an engine that requires it. My GSXR 1000 and my dirtbikes call for it ,so it doesn't seem right to shortchange my FZ1.lol The extra couple dollars a tank is worth my piece of mind.

I always run regular unleaded unless something higher octane is warranted. The way I figure it, "plus" and "super" don't sell nearly as much as regular, so regular fuel is likely to be more "fresh" from the pump. While I haven't received a bad tank of fuel from a legit gas station since probably 1996 or 1997, I go for the freshest fuel I can find. Busiest stations, etc. There aren't really any mom n' pop stations around me anymore, sadly, so supporting the neighborhood establishment isn't a thing.

I run 93 because there is a station very close to me that sells it. If I have to refill somewhere else, I go for 91 if possible. I know it costs a little more, but it gives me some piece of mind. I have an Ivan's tune that I think requires 91, but it's been so long since I had the tune done I don't remember for sure. So, I just try to do 91 or higher to be safe.

Unless Ivan has changed his tuning, he typically tunes to 89 octane.

Yeah, I wish I could remember for sure. It seems like there was an 89 octane option and a 91 octane option, but it's been so long ago I really don't remember. It was done in 2013, I believe. I should probably contact Ivan and ask him. LOL!

try saying that about gasoline in cal.

I use 91 Ethonal Free.

45mpg last tank, and I don't ever drop the RPMs below 5k for long after Ivans tune. And see a lot more redlining, lol.

(Was around mid 20s before his tune, and I usually cruised at 3.5k RPM. The ethonal free does make a difference, I don't care what they say, but I switched to that at the same time I did his tune so I can't comment on the affects of just that on an FZ1. I will say My Fj Cruiser went from 18mpg at most to 24.5 on my last tank with that switch, pretty happy given it has the aerodynamics of a brick)

45 mpg is impressive. I'm happy to get low to mid 30's. LOL!
