So got a 2003 fzs 1000. It makes a series ticking noise on the left side. Dose not go away if I pull the clutch in. It isn’t loud but enough to hear when the bike is running don’t go away when riding. I bought a mechanic stethoscope and should be here today. Anyone else ever have this

So ticking when moving or both moving and stopped? If just moving I’d be checking chain and sprockets. If it does it all the time it could be a valve Also could be the EXUP valve

Does the ticking increase with rpm?

You hear it more at an idle it tones down a little when driving what is the EXUP VALVE is it easy to fix without removing engine it’s not real loud just loud enough to hear it. When on center stand and bike is started tire isn’t moving you still hear the noise

This is not my engine as mine is on the bike but the sound comes from within that blue circle

New bike to you? Miles? Where’s the oil level at?

EXUP is part of exhaust but based on your circle I’d say you have a valve that’s tight.

My experience is these motors can go a long time without needing a valve adjustment.

If the bike’s new to you it could also be a non-issue. Can you make a recording of noise with your phone and post it?

Valve adjustments aren’t cheap ($400+) but they are part of general maintenance and the manual says you should be doing them every 25K miles. Valve adjustments are pretty cheap if you do them yourself.

New bike to me did an oil change on her to se if it would help threw a full synthetic ester based oil in there quieted down a little bit not much don’t know the real mileage guy I bought it from said he bought it and the guy didn’t write the mileage to where the dmv could read it fully so they put mileage not exact but it started up run completely fine. Other than that little noise has 22k miles on it. Can post vid tomorrow. Also do I need to pull the engine to do a valve adjustment? Only other noise is like a clunking noise from fuel pump but it accelerates as it should so not to sure of the noise might just replace the pump. Oil level is exactly where it should be. Thanks so much for the help hard to find people to help ya without being rude.

Part 1 of three

Can be done and most times is done with motor in bike. If I were you I would take it to a shop for a diagnosis and estimate. Adjusting the valves is straight forward but definitely next level shop mechanic, watch the vid. You may find that your local yamaha dealer won’t work on old bikes and you’ll have to find an independent shop.

Ya shops around here scared to work on anything older then 10 years so I can die them on a car so by watching video should be able to do a bike 😂😂 hopefully

It’s doable, just take your time. You're using your stethoscope and the noise is high up in the circle you drew, what about from the valve cover?
