Exhaust studs. Exracting them

So as some of you know already that my rotor threw its magnets. (New rotor and bearings ordered too) That meant I had to drop the sump to remove any magnet fragments. Well you need to take off the headers to drop the sump yes. Well 4 exhaust studs, the outside ones came off easy after soaking them in ATF/acetone 50/50 % mix for two days. Unfortunately the inner two cylinders studs are still stuck tight. Now only 3 as ive just snapped one grrr. I'm waiting for a stud extractor to be delivered via the post at the moment. It's the drill chuck type extractor if you know that one, I'm hoping it's going to work too.
Has any of you guys had problems with broken or stubborn studs??
In the mean time I've ordered a set of quality stainless steel studs, nuts, and washers to replace the OEM ones.
Cheers guys

Plz do yourself a favor and make sure to apply hi-temp anti-seize on your stainless fasteners :nerd:
Stainless on stainless galls very easily...especially if there is heat involved.
Heating your rusty studs with a propane torch (to a dull glow) and a generous spray of your favorite penetrating oil will make things a hell of alot easier on the studs. The thermal shock + the wicking action(due to heat) will draw in the penetrating oil and the residual heat will greatly accelerate the mild acid's rust disssolving action. It should free the most stubborn exhaust nut.
This process generates a ton of stinky smoke...it is best done outside or with the windows open.

tap the top of the stud with a small hammer to "shock" the threads
try to tighten a little first then loosen,
after removal, try to find a thread chaser or tap.

Thanks guys... I'm waiting for the stud extractor to come through the post then I will try to remove the other 3 stubborn studs. No doubt they will snap off behind the nut like the one ive already snapped. If I can't get them out myself it's a case of down to the bike shop and let a specialist drill them out, at a cost grrr. I will look for some high temp stuff to put on the new studs. I'm getting quite pissed off now with not riding for a month. I'm just waiting on parts and other people.
Cheers guys

Out of curiosity would a paint stripper gun do much ? Or not hot enough.

If say not hot enough. You need to get the nuts glowing really. A fine pencil flame is what you want like a gas welder. I tried a small blow lamp that goes to 1300*C and it just couldn't heat the nuts quick enough.

I always use a heat gun, no flame , I undo a lot rusted in bolts etc,[I own old historic motorbikes] .try to heat the nut, not the stud itself. or when you try to get out the broken stud heat around the stud, not the stud, good luck

Be real careful with the screw extractor. If you snap one of those in there you could have a load more grief / cost getting it out. I presume that's what you mean by stud extractor, an Ezyout?
