I bought a 2008 FZ1 several months ago..and it included Y.E.S. (extended warranty until 3/2014. For that reason I've been hesitant to do any mods to the bike...and I really want a different muffler at very least. I want one that makes some noise so the idiots on the road know I'm there and don't try to run me off the road so often. I've always been concerned about adding an aftermarket muffler because it would mean no EXUP valve and figured that would cause the bike to lose power and possibly Void my Warranty. With all I've been reading it doesn't sound like the EXUP would affect the bikes performance at all. If anyone has any feedback Id like to hear it...and if anyone has Ext Warranty..and knows whether or not swapping mufflers would affect that...Id like to know that too. You wont void your warranty by bolting on a slip-on and disconnecting the EXUP. Just remove the cables and leave the servo plugged in.

Yamaha sells a slip-on GYTR exhaust for the FZ1 and granted it's for "for closed-course competition use only" because it disables the EXUP and it's considerably louder than stock. If you're concerned at all talk to your local dealer first.

And to void your warranty they would have to prove that your mod caused and it's related to the issue. In other words they can't refuse to fix say a bad wheel bearing because you installed a slip-on muffler...

I think your servo may be OK, if it goes to wide open any time the ignition is ON.

The EXUP on my 2008 FZ1 has never moved! The spring holds it wide open all the time, and I have never seen the servo move it toward the closed position - ever. After removing the small cover you can manually close the valve with a 10 mm wrench - you will hear the servo working when doing this. but as soon as the ignition is turned on - the servo opens it back to wide open.

I bolted a small metal arm to the EXUP, so that I could see exactly when it moves. The damn thing never moved, no matter what - I tried full throttle, mid throttle, very light throttle, coasting, and at all different RPMs.

Now I would think that the EXUP should close somewhat under very light throttle conditions, and the Gen 1 bikes, and many others do have a functional EXUP. But for some reason the Gen 2 bikes have it there as a facade.

I even rigged up a manual control for the EXUP. It did seem to slightly boost throttle response at light throttle openings, but the difference is very subtle. Of course if it was closed very much, then WOT throttle suffered. I also could not detect any improvement in gas mileage. Many people on the forum said that this is the way it was designed, so the servo may close the valve in some extremely odd circumstances, but not for normal usage. It is weird.

The GenII has been out since 06. The "EXUP" valve (in its specific GenII form) has been examined, considered and discussed many times (at least on the other site). It does not operate in the same manner as in the GenI and the consensus seems to be that it does not have significant positive effect on engine performance. It is largely a noise reducing device . .. . Fix your GenIIs exup if you like but don't look for much in the way of performance /driveability improvement. The stock exhaust system is certainly quiet but it is also quite restrictive. A properly done performance upgrade package can make an immense improvement on power (through nearly all of the rev range) and driveability and does so with the stock exhaust and included exup sitting on the shelf.

With the help of the forums, you could likely get yourself a mint stock exhaust for little more than shipping if you find that you can't get the exup (on yours) back together just right.
