Hello fz1 brethren, I just acquired a 2001 fz1 that’s been sitting since 2009 in a auction lot.. that being said the bike wouldn’t do anything at first there was at one time a small fire under the tank around the starter area. I have replaced the harness now I have power to everything and the odo reads 24k miles, that’s like reallly good right?

So now that the bike will power on everything thats wired in correctly (will explain) I’d like to see what y’all would do, I’m newish to bikes but I figure just like any other motor, clean the carbs, I’m not getting spark from the coils so new set, but what else I’ve looked down the intake and it doesn’t look rusty or gunked up. But what’s your opinion.

Ok so the wiring was burn and then as far as I can tell someone let there buddy’s cousin who’s a Jedi with wires try to fix it which went as you can expect astoundingly bad. The coils were wired with both signal wires on one and powers on the other. And so many splices other than the OEM ones. My question with wiring is I have constant 12v on both wires leaving and feeding the starter button on the handle bar which I thought to be bad ground but can’t find it. And the gauge cluster has 3 wires leaving the cluster connector plug that I cannot find where they lead or end up the colors of wire are BLACK/YELLOW (I’m told goes to coil #1 signal wires for tachometer signal?)
BLUE (headlight indicator?)
BROWN(gauge illumination?)
Any the bike was dirt cheap and I fell in love with the naked fz1 mod so please help me out

It sounds like you have quite a project ahead of you. I'm not sure how to help you with your wiring, but if you are replacing your coils, perhaps you should replace the spark plugs as well. Maybe change the oil, too. Also, check to see if you have the new style rotor.

Isn't that a Gen 2 issue?

Yea I’d like to update the forum as I go if I can remember but I forgot to add I got the bike for $200. And I’ll check the rotor and this air box and me about to fight it out is there a different box or what’s the mod everyone mentions

Well the dust might not be as thick as I thought but while waiting on parts you’re supposed to strip/sand/paint right? New to fz1 haven’t got to ride or hear her purr yet but my complaints so far are. The air box will make you wanna burn it all down (tight fit knuckle buster) . I’ve cleaned a handful of carbs but four linked together is or can be daunting at first make sure to have a service manual. But all in all I know it’s worth it since I paid $200.. let me know what yall think and any recommendations for a 2001 been sitting since 2009 with 24k miles, IMG_5719.webpIMG_5718.webp
