FZ1 or Ninja 1000?

Looking at a 06 with 1,200 miles and in new condition and priced at $4,800. What was the fuel cut problem? The person selling mentioned that it does have a very slight hesitation at 3,000 rpm on full throttle. He doesn't even notice it when riding normally. I do have up to 8K to spend but like everyone looking for the best bang for the buck.

Also looking at a 10 with the same mileage as the 06 but he mention the tank has a scratch which he tried to sand out. Then said the seat may be a bit faded from the sun. Thought that was strange for a 2010. I contacted my local body shop and was told repainting the tank would be $300. He's priced the bike at $7,000.

Thanks everyone for helping out. Much appreciated.

I got my '09 for under $6000 and it only had 5200 miles on with a fresh set of tires and oil.

I personally would find something after '08 and be ok with the mileage up to 8000.

A few thoughts . . .

Frame cracking on the 06s (and some 07s) is a noted issue but it's occurence rate is small. Check the large welds in the side frame rails underneath the gas tank. You will be able to see the cracks if they are there. If the frame hasn't cracked yet there is good reason to believe it probably won't.

Read up on "throttle snatch" and the "FCE." The earliest GenIIs have it (throttle snatch) the worst. Ivan's FCE will eliminate this issue completely but does require splicing into the harness. Plenty of info on this and the FZ10A site on this subject

I purchased my 06 with 12k miles 3 summers ago for $3400. Market may have rebounded some but you should be able to find decent used genII for $4k or less.

IMHO it makes no sense to buy a new or nearly new GenII unless the deal is ridiculously smokin. In stock form the Kawi 1000s are better sorted and a more updated design. Heck if you actually like the way they look (not my cup of tea at all) then all the more reason to go that way.

I have about $7.5k in my 06 ($4k in upgrades, see signature) and it will handily outperform a latest gen Z1000 that you could put together for the same $ (mostly stock). Power, power delivery, handling, comfort, utility have all been transformed with the mods. IMHO the GenII absolutely needs the upgrades; it's intake / exhaust is majorly corked up, its fueling is poor, its rear shock is junk, its seat is hard as a rock. Good news is that the paths to elightenment are well travelled as this bike has been around since 06 in essentially its current form. All you need is some elbow grease and some $. . .Buy a cheap GenII and let the modding begin. You won't regret it.

FZ1 is a gentleman's sport bike and Ninjas, although very nice, are for a younger demographic.

The Ninja 1000 is not for the younger demographics. It is not racey enough for them. They go gaga over ZX10s.

I have yet to ride a Ninja 1000, but I have ridden with Squidlius with him on his Ninja 1000. It is quick out of the turns. I will have to see how much he pulls me now that I have the full exhaust.

The two guys I rode with the weekend on the Ninja 1000's in there 70's..lol extremely fast local legends. So much for younger crowd. I was the baby at 47..

Bought this and pick it up in 2 weeks. Can't believe how clean it is and unmolested. I guess I'll be spending so more time on this form and less on the FZ6 forum.

Congratulations, I have the same color 06. Just ride it, it's great fun. I still have the stock shock and seat and I am fine with both just did a 3k mile trip on it.

Everyone has other needs but many people "upgrade" the bike without every really riding it so just enjoy it ;).

I ride with Quiet Rider (Roger) from the other forum. He is 75 and rides a GSXR750 way better and lots faster than others I ride with. His pace is excellent. Fast and fun, but not stupid. When he waves me past, I know I'm getting into the "Be Careful" zone.

I've rode the ninja 1000 ( or the Z1000SX to be more exact) and it's nowhere near exciting. It's a good, good looking bike, but the huge risers decouple you from the front wheel to such extent that you d on't feel any feedback. You sit completely upright like on a tourer. And it doesn't have the top end of the FZ1. It has midrange grunt better than the FZ1 but after that it fades.

The ZX10 cannot even be compared to the FZ1 and Z1000. It's COMPLETELY MINDBLOWING. It accelerates in third gear harder than the FZ1 in first gear with the 16T sprocket. Much harder. At the first test ride I had to stop a couple of times to try and reset my brain because it couldn't keep up - i guess you get used to it after a couple of hours or so. No wonder that's what everyone who can ride in a fetal position wants.
Me, I want something that won't give me leg cramps, wrist, shoulder and back aches. I was thinking about maybe a fighter kitted R1 '09 so I can sit upright and still have the grunt of a sportbike, but right now since the R1 doesn't have ABS that's out of the question. Maybe in a couple of years

EDIT: Here not even the insurance companies consider the FZ1 and Z1000 to be sport bikes. They go under the Street (streetbike) category, like the nakeds. Even a KTM 690 has more expensive insurance
