hey , hope this helps... 1st gen fz1 is heavier and has weaker suspension. much better low end grunt though. 2nd gen is much lighter and better handling. Not nearly as comfy though. I have ridden both.
 
The Gen 2 is only 20lbs lighter and the rear shock is complete crap(replace asap). They really are different motorcycles, it's kinda like comparing a ZRX to a Z1000. The Gen1 is a do it all motorcycle not really excelling at anything but very good at everything the Gen2 is a sporting naked. If your looking for quicker turn in, a little less weight or more peak HP then the Gen2 is for you. If you want good comfort, do a fair bit of 2up riding and still have good performance in a slightly more affordable package than the Gen1 is for you. The best thing to do is ride both and pick the one that best suits you.

I heard that elsewhere.
 
I have a 2003 FZS1000, but it has the FZ1 decals on the faring. Perhaps earlier models had FAZER decal on the faring. Were gen-1 models all called FZS1000, when did they start calling them FZ1?
