Bike's an '06 with stock suspension with 2,000 miles and used only for street riding. Ride is 175lbs with gear.

I'd try to get the front no more than 35. I had mine at around 30 but like it to be a bit stiffer.

I moved the front to 34. Just hope it's not to stiff, the roads are terrible around here.

Preload / sag does not affect "stiffness". It's the compression and rebound that affect stiffness.

Now that your in the "ballpark" you have a decision to make. You need to find a road that is what you want to set your bike up for. Once you have that figured out, then go out and test on it. You gotta spend/invest some time and effort into getting it right. And don't be afraid to change the settings, just don't change more than 1 thing at a time. Make big changes at first so you can get an idea what those changes are doin.

Too soft can feel too stiff, ie you don't have a lot of travel to play with so if it is really soft, it will bottom out very easily.
