Intake Temperature?

Why do I want to know and what does it tell me when I read the intake temperature is....90, 99, 82, etc... I find this to be one of the most useless things they could have put on the bike. I wish I knew how to move it from the airbox to outside behind the fairing so I would know what the outside temp is. Anyone got any good reasons why Yamaha did this?

I'm no expert (hell, I'm a Gen I owner), but reading information on the web regarding the intake sensor, NADA! I did find out that colder air = better performance and that if the "what if" scenario begins to run, there are some potentially interesting results if someone were to carry them out.....

From what I know about engines both intake air temp and humidity effect the performance. Low humidity and high temp really kill power and makes the engine likely to ping & knock. The main use I have for this display is to see if the engine feel warmer than myself and to practice pushing buttons with my gloves :)
