I recently got some Iasus XSJ Helmet Speakers, and a FiiO Headphone Amplifier. The goal here is to replace the Sony fontopia Earbuds I wear when I ride... the earbuds are great, but it's a pain to get my helmet on without knocking the buds out, and they tend to make my ear canal hurt after about an hour of wear...
So, in looking around, I found this combination on eBay ... and at the time I looked, the auction had 4 hours left, and the bid was at 35.00 ... so, I bid $36, and let it ride... The package came in the mail today.
That's the amplifier... it's about the size of the old iPod Shuffle. The construction is rather impressive for a cheap unit... the shell is metal, with a nice wide metal clip on the back to attach it to yourself.
First Impressions:
The amplifier is interesting... it doesn't add much volume, but it does add better sound quality, especially at high volume. It has a bass boost that makes a decent difference. The charger is a pain in the ass. It's a USB 2.0 charger, and they expect you to plug it in to your computer to charge it... thank god my cell phone takes the same charger....
These sell for $15-$20 online on eBay and Amazon.
Would I recommend one? Well... the difference in volume isn't amazing... but the difference in audio quality is more impressive.... If you don't have any speaker setup at all... I'd say take the $20 and upgrade from the $30 Iasus XSJ Speakers to the XSound2 speakers ($50) and skip the amplifier... but.. if you have some speakers you'd like to improve the audio quality of.... the amplifier is a good way to do that on the cheap.
side note: the helmet speakers sound GREAT sitting in the living room, holding them up towards my face... but I'm going to hold off on the review of those until I can actually get out and ride. ... and it's snowing.
