Popping- does it hurt anything

This might be a mods section question, I couldn't decide which one fit better- feel free to move it if you want.

Recently put on a two brothers vale m5 carbon and love it. I haven't done the AIS blockoff because I actually like the sound of popping on decel and, living in kaliforniastan, I'm worried that someday they'll smog my bike, so I want to be able to take it back to stock pretty easily.

My question is, could the popping/lean exhaust condition potentially do anything bad to the slip-on? I don't mind repacking it a little more often or something, but if it has the potential to actually damage the CF or something like that, I'll probably do the AIS removal mod.

No issues...leave it like it is until you get tired of it (if you ever do). By the way the AIS mod when only blocking the hose at the airbox is easy enough to reverse.
 
I guess some like it some hate it,I personally don`t like it, to me it means your fuel mixture is out.I have some old bikes a 61 matchless G80TCS and a 1942 BSA WM20 if these bikes started popping I would fix them immediately as it can do major damage to them.In the FZ1 I can`t say if any long term damage would occur but it certainally won`t help them. Don`t want to start a arguement here it`s just my opinion

Well in the case of the FZ1 it doesn't mean that the mixture is lean so hence my comment about no harm happening. It's actually fuel igniting in the exhaust due to the AIS injecting additional air...
 
Yeah, that was my thought process too- the engine isn't lean, it's just getting massive pops of air in the headers post-exhaust stroke.

As long as the detonation isn't impacting exhaust longevity, I'm gonna leave it as is. I think it sounds mean :)
 
Fuel igniting explosively in mufflers tends to blow up mufflers - doesn't matter - cars, trucks, lawnmowers, tractors ...
It is the "explosion" in the muffler that can damage over time. Same as backfires (explosions) can blow up air cleaners in engines. I've seen many...

Mufflers and air cleaners are not normally designed to withstand explosions. The "explosion" is supposed to be in the cylinder...

That is true but those massive explosions are the result of a very rich condition. The little pops are from a minute amount of fuel igniting with
the additional air provided by the AIS system.


When you get a HUGE backfire its a build up of excessive fuel.

The little pops from the AIS are nothing to worry about.

You can disable the AIS like I did by simply pulling the ais hose off of the #4 carb boot nipple(right side) and put a rubber cap over the nipple. The caps are available at any auto parts store for a couple bucks for a few of them. Stick a machine bolt in the end of the ais hose if you like. No more popping.

Just curious about this mod, does blocking off the hose to the # 4 intake boot disable the ais, or does the lack of vacum on it make the ais think your off the throttle and kick in the ais, meaning have the oppisite effect you are wanting?
 
If just blocking the # 4 intake hose to the ais disables it, seems like everyone would do it, its alot easier than blocking off the tube from the airbox to the ais?

Need Help! im doing the AIS block off at the airbox, i have removed the AIS hose and plugged the airbox...stupid question..what do i do with the hose? with bike running its still pumping air and is noisy...please help!

Video @ 5:40 shows one way to block the hose it needs to be plugged with a dowel, bolt or marble.
