R1 R6 Master Cylinder Rebuild

If you have converted to the R1 front end this could be a practical guide. Overall it is a very simple process.

1) Remove MC from the bike. Be careful not to spill brake fluid on the bike's paint.

2) Remove the brake lever and plunger pin.

3) Remove rubber boot.

4) Remover circlip.

5) Remove plunger, spring, and the thing inside of the spring.

6) Carefully clean, use alcohol (IPA, as Scotch is too expensive).

7) Reassemble, reinstall on bike, bleed brakes; two full reservoirs worth is a good rule of thumb.

8) Clean up any spill brake fluid.

NOTE: I bought the R1/R6 MC rebuild kit off of Ebay, DON"T! I have no idea what kit this is for but it isn't the R1/R6.

If you need a kit buy from a Yamaha dealer.

Thanks for the write up Pete. And I agree with you. I have found that for stuff like this (and brake calipers and fork seals) it's best to go with the OEM stuff, unless they no longer make it.

I need to rebuild the clutch mc on my YZF1000 and I'm just waiting until the weather gets a little warmer around here. I'll also install my new levers at the same time :)

OEM = :yes:

This is also cheap insurance for any aging MC... what is more important on your bike than the front brakes!!??!!?? ;)

Thanks Pete.
