Raised line on tire?

There is a line on my rear tire (see the attached picture). At first, it just looks like a line in the road dust/dirt that accumulated on the tire, but it's actually a raised line on the rubber itself. It's not raised much -- maybe 1/2 mm or so, and it goes completely around the tire. There isn't anything dragging, and I haven't run it very hard. The tire still has plenty of life left in it, but I have no idea what the line is. The line has been there for maybe two hundred miles, doesn't appear to be getting worse. My first thought is some sort of manufacturing defect. The tire is a Michelin Pilot Road.

on my old ninja i had a perelli diablo 3 and i had 2 raised lines, basicaly there was a low spot in the very center, when i locked the rear brake it would leave 2 parallel lines behind me. long story short that tire ended up casing me to go down. i would try and burn that off a little with sime use. if there is a raised line, the tire is obviously not touching the ground equally and i know from expirence that not enough rubber in a cold day sends my ninja down the road without me on it

I think I'll try to contact Michelin and see what they have to say. Alternatively, I now have a tire that might be a good "donor" for learning how to do a burnout. :sinister:

I've had several Pilot Roads and never had your problem. Call Michelin

I've had that same line on Bridgestones, Avon Storms, Pilot Roads and Pilot Roads 2. I think it is where the halves of the tire mold come together. Anyway it has never caused me a problem. Cureently at 7700 miles on the PR2s and the line is there.

Resolution

I talked to Michelin customer service. After getting bounced around among a few departments, I spoke with one of the motorcycle tire specialists. The explanation was that this is a "magnetic strip" that they place in all of their motorcycle tires to "keep you from getting electrocuted." There is no compromise to the integrity of the tire or to the traction.

Apparently, I'm okay with running the tire down through the rest of its life. Might still do a couple of burnouts, though.

Same tire that was on my 08 FZ1 and it also has the same line on it. Noted that the Road II that I put on the Bandit and my mates BMW have the same line on them.

"John" was the guy I spoke to, and my response was, "Are you serious?" He maintained his position, but never really gave a reason that I was satisfied with. I moved on to the safety-related questions. I don't really care why the line is there, just that it isn't some sort of indication of a premature failure. I've had crappy luck with tires this season, and the last thing I need is a major incident because I wasn't paying attention to the equipment.
