Recomended Fuel?

The Australian owners manual must be a bit different to the USA one, on page 3-16 it says - Your Yamaha engine has been designed to use regular gasoline with a research octane number of 91 or higher.If knocking[or pinging] occurs,use a gasoline of a different brand or premium unleaded fuel. So I guess its up to you what octane your happier with. On a different subject oil ,page 6-11 it says -Do not use oils with a diesel specification of Cd or oil of a higher guality than specified.[another can of worms]

Octane numbers between the US and Australia differ because they use different methods (RON vs AKI) of calculating such numbers. For the US regular 87 octane is what's recommended and that is what "matches" the 91 octane requirement in Australia. You can read all about it here.

I realize that your octane reading is different, but it says in our australian manual to use higher than 91 octane[your 87 octane] if pinging occurs, our common octanes here are 91,95 & 98

Well I suppose under certain conditions (very hot day, loaded bike, going up a steep grade, etc...) regular gas could cause pinging. In that case it warrants going up to the next higher grade. I have never experienced any pinging running my bike on 87 octane even when carrying a passenger.

I just use 91 octane for highway use,but if I go scratching with the go fast boys though the tight twisties,mountains etc I`ll use a higher octane,most people I know do the same here in Oz.Sometimes it is possible pinging can occur with out the rider being aware of it.

I wonder if the reason for the difference between the USA & Australian owners manual on this issue is more of a USA goverment regulation thing? than a Yamaha one

There are different formulas in various countries to measure octane. Too much to type on the phone, but IIRC Wiki had a good article.

You have got to remember that the quality of our fuel is lower than most other places.
My bike is modified a fair bit and was dyno tuned on the 95 so that's what I use.
