Tachometer jumps on and off

Hello all. Can't find a post like this, so here's the question. While revving steadily, my tachometer flings up to where it should be, then shuts all the way down, like there is an on-again, off-again connection.
Is this a mechanical link or an electronic pickup? Where should I start looking, please?

What year bike is it and does it also effect the running of the bike or is it just reading up and down?

tach jumping

My FZ is a 2002. The engine runs perfectly, no hiccups at all when the tach needle is doing it's trampoline thing. If this were 1964 and it was a Chevy, I'd suspect the speedometer cable was pulling out of the socket, but geez, I don't want to appear as old as I am.
