Hey folks, just picked up my new to me 09 fz1 and I am looking for some info regarding top case luggage racks. I have seen the Flat Deck project and the SW-MOTECH Alu-Rack Toprack, I think these are the best options.

I currently have my top case bolted to a spare rear seat of my SV, I use it all of the time to commute to work and carry gatorade/water/snacks when i hit the mountains.

I am also looking at the SW Motech set up as it looks great and like it will solve the need and if i need to put something on the rear seat, i still have it. i say something because i never have a passenger. I am leaning against it though, I am concerned about the front wobble I read about with the Yamaha rack.

Does anyone have experience with both or a strong opinion on one or the other or maybe some other option that I didn't find searching this section? I realize one is much more expensive than the other, but at the price points, I'm not that concerned about it as its like $100 bucks difference. I mean what's a $100 over a few years of enjoyment.

Thanks a lot folks!

Pat

I mounted mine (26ltr Givi) to my spare rear seat base. Used a couple of 20mm round bar (alloy) 50mm long tapped 6mm each end for the rear mounts and straight to the base on front. Then refitted the foam and cover (just for looks)

i like the look of the top case off of the seat, but im concerned about the highway speed wobbles

Well I got my SW Motech rack installed and the old top case on it.
came out nice, i needed to get some additional hardware as i didnt have a few of the nuts needed from the stock rear fender and to reinstall the license plate. i might also redo the plate mounting, but for now its all working just fine.
I also think it looks a lot better than bolted to a rear seat plate.

on to the pics if you care.

Is that a milk crate mounted to your WR?

why yes, that is a milk crate on the WR, second one of them too. first one broke when the 1 gallon gas can blew through the back of it on a trail.
i only use the milk crate when i commute on it now, it holds my coffee, lunch, lock, and all sorts of stuff. people at work love making fun of me for it too.

Looks like he went the cheap route with that top case :D

the JC Whitney case was cheap too, but it works. :)
