Rough shifts when warm

I have had this bike for a while know and have put a couple thousand miles on it. The bike shifts well when it's cool but when it warms up the shifts become very notchy. This is very evident when going from neutral to first. When cold it goes in easy with no noise. Once warm however, it produces a loud clunk and lurches the bike forward.

Second gear is also not the best to get into but I hear that's normal. Any idea how to solve the other issues. Bike has 33k on it and I use rotella t6 oil 10w-40.

It is my understanding that this is pretty normal for this bike and Yamaha's in general. I would not worry to much about it. If it is lurching I would be more worried about proper clucth lever/cable adjustment. It is not fully disengaged.

I know there is tons of info on oil....what do you run?

I have a gen2 and if im honest i found the gearbox clunky compared to my old suzuki and my 30 year old yam , I changed the oil for yamalube with oe filter and found it to be a lot better , as said many different oils out there you cant really call it thats why i went with yamalube , figured they know what there doing ( although probably made by castrol or the like) !!!!!

Mine did the same using Rotella... That's why I drained it out after 200 miles and never ran it again....

Others love it, but my 01 hated it.

I always ran Klotz, Amsoil, Motil, or Castrol Superbike.

Run Rotella with no problems. I have riden a few Gen 1's and they all have a clunk when shifting into first from neutral. The lurching forward forsure is not normal and as others have said most likely a miss adjusted clutch.
You should have some free play on the clutch lever about 2/8's to 1/4 inch, if you do not have any play then it is set wrong

I'll mention that if you have a aftermarket adjustable clutch lever don't adjust it to close to the bars. My CRG lever has to be in the last 2-3 positions to properly adjust the clutch. Position 1 and 2 are too close to the bars and dont provide a long enough stroke to fully disengage the clutch.

I broke in my motor on castrol non-synthetic 15w40 motorcycle oil and later switched to Rotella T6 and immediately noticed improved shifting.

"clunk"

I have met several Gen 2 owners that claimed the FZ1 and R1 have noisy gear change sounds, so I am used to mine not being very smooth.

Does anyone experience a loud "Clunk" sound and the whole bike sort of jumps nowhere at a stop, going from neutral then shifting into first? It seems to shift fine once under speed.

Put the bike on centerstand, start in neutral and see if there is any clutch drag (rear tire rotation). If there is adjust the cable at the lever until the tire does not rotate. That should solve, or diminish, this 'problem'.

Update.. the last few 2 oil changes I've used Mobil 1 MX4t ( motorcycle oil ) and the shifting is better than ever................... for a Yamaha hahahaha.

2/8's to 1/4 inch

Isnt that the same?...

I have always used the "NICKLE" to measure the freeplay.

Like Groogan, my shifting improved with the T6.

OP, when you pull in the lever, give it a second or 2 before you kick it into gear. Bliping the throttle lightly will also help the clutch plates break the oil tension between them.
