Hello.
Have you ever consider guys how to made ours fz1 lighter for reasonable money? Its a perfect bike exept the fact its to heavy. How about different wheels, from r1 for example or maybe from something else. Post here your sugestions. Have a nice day.

Not sure what you mean by "too heavy". It is a standard and only 33 pounds heavier than the R1. I don't really expect a standard to be the same weight as an SS.

That being said, more than half of that can be reclaimed by getting rid of the center stand and getting an after market exhaust system.

I agree with Hail. While it is heavier than an R1, it is still lighter than say an FZ8 and FZ6R and most likely an FZ6. Not sure how you expect to get such a big bike to be much lighter. The stock exhaust on the FZ1 is really heavy. If I had to guess, it would be close to 10-12 lbs, so there are tons of ways to save weight.

Switching exaust and tail section made a big difference but i love the centerstand and it will be staying put also try putting some miles on a 700 lb plus bike and your fz will magically fell lighter

There is A LOT of weight that can be removed from this bike....it all depends on your end goal and purpose....and $$$$.

Aftermarket exhaust (full system)
Aftermarket battery
Aftermarket Wheels
Lose center and kick stands
Lose turn signals and mirrors
Lose tool kit
Lose passenger pegs
Aftermarket rearsets

and on and on.

Since this bike is so heavy, here are some tips to saving weight:

- Remove exhaust system completely and just run an open motor
- Remove airbox and get the thinnest panty hose you can to cover the inlets
- Only run 1 litre of oil in the motor
- Run with very little gas in the tank, fuel is heavy
- Drain as much coolant as you can, remove the electric fans
- Remove all light bulbs, including headlights
- Remove all plastics, covers and cowlings
- Anywhere there's more than 1 bolt holding something in, remove them
- Cut the tread off your tires, rubber is heavy too
- Remove the battery completely and just get used to push-starting your bike instead
- Replace the seat with some cardboard
- Remove your rear brake and one front brake
- Drill holes in your frame

Those are just some simple tips you can use to save weight. If you want to get serious, you should consider an engine swap. A 2-stroke 50cc scooter motor will save you a TON of weight compared to that crazy heavy R1 powerplant. You're bound to save 100 lbs there alone

Just shedding weight doesn't mean it is going to handle better or go faster. The biggest and most effective thing you can do to enhance the performance of any machine is to get training in being a better, more confident rider. 99% of us can't tap the full potential in a box stock FZ1 so we do things like shedding weight which sounds good but really doesn't help you ride faster and more confident. But taking the center stand off and getting a lighter set of headers/exhaust is easier than getting personal training and confronting our deficiencies in road craft. My opinion.

I was thinking about a BMW R1000RR instead of the FZ1 since it weighs 80-90 pounds less and has about 70 hp more plus it would be over $5K more than the FZ1. Until I realized that I would never even push the FZ1 to its limits. It is still one of the lightest in its class.

I can tell you one thing for certain. Do not buy a Corbin seat if your are trying to drop weight from the FZ1. They are HEAVY.

Now why is the FZ1 heavier than the R1. The answer is steel. The R1 uses aluminum in places like spacers. It's cheaper to use steel, the the non-SS bike gets the less costly heavier parts.

If I were to try to make my bike light as possible from the stock configuation I would...

*remove the reflectors
*FE
*remove the passenger peg assy
*remove center stand.
*Graves full exhaust
*rear sets
*make an aluminum fairing mount to replace steel
*remove AIS
*carbon fiber rear seat cowl
*lighter brake disk front and rear with Ti hardware
*Remove extra materials to lighten (axel adjustment blocks for example)
*lighter aftermarket turn signals.
*remove as much weight as possible from sub-frame.

Probably just going to say the same thing

-Naked Euro Headlight conversion (no fairing, windshield, light weight fairing stay instead of steel bar, and only 1 headlight housing)
-switch to little pig spotter mirrors
-Remove Center Stand
-Aftermarket exhaust (2 bros says OEM exhaust is 15.35lbs and their aftermarket setup is 4lbs)
- Fender eliminator (smallest lightweight aluminum one as possible)

@Dustin - bahahahahahaha. That was pretty good.

I agree

After 10 year of renting/wrestling HD, my FZ1 feels like the CB175 I borrowed to take my CA DMV test in 1974.

It will be years before I have the skills to tap into what the FZ1 can offer in performance.

(and I was shopping for a Hayabusa?)

: oops:

Stock pipe is 16 lbs. The 8 for some reason feels lighter than the 1 tho. After I get off mine and onto hers it feels waaaay lighter even though it supposedly isnt.

In fact I cant see how the 8 is heavier. Its got a lighter pipe/muffler no fairing, smaller internals, and most of the rest is almost the same.
I dont buy her 8 being 32 lbs heavier than my 1

Dude your killing me, that's some funny shit.

This is what I think about shedding weight if it's a huge concern I think you bought the wrong bike. Because by the time you buy all the after market light chit you probably could of bought what you really wanted in the first place. Ask me how I know I had 10 grand in my gen 2 that's no bull and I bought it when it first came out in 2006 when it was 11000.00, so 22 grand = one 1098 or Multistrada. If you doubt me go to the FZ1oa forum and look up jff_stvns and look up my post on the Full Yosh exhaust and you will see what Im talking about it was 1 bad MOFO, and definitely not worth it.
