Synthetic Oil Recommendations

My oil choice for the FZ1 is almost entirely based on improved shifting.
I've run Castrol motorcycle specific ( dino )
Rotella ( syn )
Rotella (dino )
and Mobil 1mx4t ( syn, motorcycle specific )

The shifting is the best, smooth not so notchy with the Mobil mx4t

The worst was the castrol, horrible shifting.

Same here.

I just don't see the need to fork over the extra money for synthetic.

The K&N oil filter is great. Filters well, I suppose, and is easy to get on and off, most importantly.

Really the most important thing in keeping the oil clean is the air filter not the oil and oil filter.

I think it's funny that people state they use a K&N air filter to "save money", but change their oil every 1,500 miles... I've not figured that one out yet...

That said. On my Tuono I run either Motul or Eni and an Aprilia (Paggio) filter. Heaven forbid the motor crater during warranty, I'm not taking any chances, and I only have the oil changed at the dealer. The nearest one is 110 miles away. I just call ahead, make an appointment, trailer her in, take the wife to breakfast, pick the bike up and then go shopping with wife. Said oil change ends up being about $793.42. :eek5:

Once it's out of warranty, back to the Cycle Gear special of the week.

OCD Upkeep

I change my oil (and filter) every 3k. I am only at 8,000 right now on my 2008, but I'm changing them, before a weekend trip in the Sierras. I rarely ever go above 5k on the tachometer and the oil in the glass Level window looks like new, but at age 59, this "1st bike" may be the "only" motorcycle I ever own, so I do everything I can for correct maintenance (after 25 years, I finally got a garage door and opener, but I STILL put the disc lock and bike cover on the FZ1). : owned:
Bro I have a liter bike and don’t go above 5k revs, should of got a slower bike

I know this is old, but just read this and I could not help but think the same thing, If you barely go above 5k RPM on an FZ1 why on earth did you buy it? It just starts to come alive above 5k.. Sounds like Sactown should have bought a V twin if not wanting to go above 5k RPM.. LOL

I don't know of any bike or any engine configuration that I wouldn't rev over 5000 rpm. A Harley maybe.

Was looking for cheap oil for a small pick up truck that I plan to trade in soon…….. so I was looking on Walmart’s online site.

Was surprised to see that out of 95 choices of various oil weights in various volumes (Qt., Gal, bulk) that only two choises were Dino oil. Everything else is synthetic. I suspect the two Dino choices are mainly used by engine rebuilders for break in purposes. By the way Wlamarts' house brand synthetic is as cheap as the Dino.

Normally I use Mobil 1 or equal in my vehicles.

My experience - pretty much all oils work great and shift well in the bike for the first 1,000 or two miles, but then shifting gets noticably "grittier", except for Mobil1 4T, it seems to hold up well in that regards. I was one of those that changed it every 3,000 miles, but quit that nonsense a few years ago and now go about 5,000 or so. I came to the conclusion after a lot of record-keeping that we obsess way too much and over-do maintenance. Fz1 is sitting at about 55,000 or so and runs like a new machine. Ride more worry less.

As for the car and truck, the Wal-Mart Supertech synth has worked and lasted just as well as the Mobil1 I used for years.

Agree, I’m giving the Supertech a try today for my truck. $18/5gts. Also agree on pushing change intervals to 5 and possibly beyond. I change my own to save $ but by the time you bring the old oil back it results in a lot of effort.

I’ve never experienced any issues with my Gen 1s shifting. Clutch cable wear probably has been a bigger issue but that mainly affects my left hand and not so much going into gear.

Supertech is as good as anything. I use that or STP oil from Autozone in my autos and trucks because I can't stand going into Wal-Mart. The last batch of Supertech I bought on eBay.
For my motorcycles I have been happy with Rotella T4 or T5.
