Reinstall Tail after Mounting Givi Racks

I got a set of GIVI side bags and the associated hardware for the FZ1 as a Christmas present. They're used, but everything was included, and I was able to get all the hardware attached to the bike with a little work. When I went to reinstall the tail section, it doesn't seem to clear the new brackets that were installed as part of the PLX359KIT hardware.

Anyone done this before? I'm kind of at my wits' end.

You are using the Givi racks? If so, I can't say on those - but I did have a fair struggle with the under tail section on my SW-Motech racks too.

Yes, I think that they're the Givi racks. I got the cut out on the under-tail managed just fine with a rotary tool and a small sanding barrel. It's reinstalling the "tail fairing" that I can't seem to manage. The plastic that wraps around the sides of the tail doesn't seem to offer enough flex to get around the newly mounted brackets.

Here's a picture from the other forum (not my post) that shows the bracket in place. This is what I'm trying to get around.

Yeah, sorry Amigo - those are definitely different from my set up. I did not have to remove the tail plastic/fairing on my install.

Mine just snapped right over the mounts. You just need to spread it a little and pay attention to the taillight. It's real tight but does go on.

Same here. Can't say that it was an easy job, but carefully spreading the plastic out to the side while moving it toward the front of the bike got the job done.

Ok. I'm just terrified of cracking the plastics. It's good to know that there's no more cutting that needs to be done or anything.

I brought the tail piece in the house to warm it up a little bit. I'm working in a heated area, but that only means about 50F. It's a few degrees warmer inside, and I figure the warmer the part is, the less brittle the plastic will be.

The tabs that stick out the bottom in the picture DO reguire the lower plate to have two small sections removed. I will post some pictures shortly. The upper tail section, sides should go back on without modification. I had the same set up.

I think I know the cut-outs that you are talking about. Nice of Yamaha to pre-mark the lower plate with the exact cuts to make. My rotary tool and a barrel sanding attachment made quick work of removing the plastic.

You know what I am talking about then!

I just can't remember what order I assembled the tail when I did the install. I am fairly certain I mounted those tabs then persuaded the tail section back on, then installed the undertail, before installing the racks.

Those are awesome pics. Helps to know that I've done things so far correctly. What did you do to electrify your bags? Is it just for running lights, turn signals, or do you have 12V in there?

Here are some pictures of what's giving me trouble. Maybe they'll help. It just seems like I'm flexing the tail an awful lot. I un-did one of the screws that holds the plastic to the frame to give it a little more flex. I think I should be able to get it back in once the tail is in place. Still, it's a very tight fit.

I seem to remember sliding the tail section on from the back. I worked it forward starting slightly below, coming from down and behind the frame, not pushing down and from above. When I removed it I pulled back and down working past the tight spots. Re-installing was just the reverse.

You could loosen the bolts that hold the sections of the tail together.

As to the lights, I bought a kit from Admore Lights in Calgary to add full lighting (signals, tail, brake) to the V-35 Bags. They worked great!

Victory!

Whew! That was a lot harder than I thought! Got the tail section back on, bags installed, and everything seems right with the world.

I ended up removing four screws that hold the plastic to the metal frame of the tail fairing. That gave the plastic enough flex that I wasn't crapping my pants as I jostled the tail over the new frame-mounted brackets. I was able to reinstall those screws after the tail was in place (but not bolted down) with the help of a flexible screwdriver. See the pics for the screws I'm talking about.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice on this. My biggest worry was that I was going to have to cut more plastic to get the tail back on the bike. I have to say, if I ever have to remove the tail again, I might consider buying a new bike. That was tough!
