Hello everyone. First time getting into a forum website. Just got a 2009 Yamaha fz1 with 13,000 miles and would like to learn from experienced/long time riders with the same bike. Just got the bike and fell in love with it on the first ride and would like to keep it in good condition. As of now i just ordered a new stator flywheel rotor for the bike as i've read this can cause issues. Im curious as to what other preventative maintenance can be done to keep this bike in good working condition. Any advice/tips are welcomed!

That's probably about it assuming it hasn't sat unused for long periods. If it sits too long there are a number of people that have had to clean the tank and change the fuel pump. Also, the seals in the water pump/oil pump can leak oil or water from the weep hole in the oil pan. Hopefully these will not apply to you!

Welcome to the FZ1 life! I have an 09’ as well. 65k miles…Great bike, you will enjoy. Their is endless knowledge here. Read up and ask questions. Doesn’t matter if its been asked before. Us FZ1 owners are a dyeing breed and are looking for any excuse to talk about our bikes. Can’t think of anything I really needed to do except for that rotor replacement. Just do a good inspection of all the equipment/components(don’t ask about oil).

thanks for the advise! the bike was pretty active from the previous owners and well taken care of but good to know those can be potential problems. exactly what i was hoping to get some insight.

Thank you! I'm loving every minute of it, such an underrated motorcycle for sure. Got the rotor ordered and will probably replace it this coming weekend just for peace of mind. A thorough inspection is always a good idea. Thanks for the advise!

Is that rotor thing really something I need to consider? How many people didn't do it? I'm sure most owner don't even know it's an issue. Or am I wrong? Someone could say anything can go wrong... and go viral with paranoia. Will Murphy and his Law strike me down?

You shouldn't consider it. Just do it. 500$ and you fixed the single biggest and one of the only faults this bike has. The risk is too unknown. Go OEM. There are a few good vids on YT. Search “FZ1 rotor replacement”.

I did mine just to be certain.. the one i removed was fine. Mine has done 18k

Mind boggling Yamaha would not make a recall on this, and own the mistake. I guess I'll put this in priority on my little list... I just bought mine. Not a scratch on it. 2006 with 13 000km.

Check out this Page for the rotor replacement. OK, so I haven't figured out how to just add a link....

I reversed a spacer and messed up bearings. There are bolded parts in this thread to prevent that from happening. Just follow the videos and heed the warnings (that I obviously didn't heed), and the rotor replacement is a piece of cake. You should only need the first two posts on the thread. It includes all of the parts that you will need and key things to watch for in the process.

It's a simple job if you put it all back in the way it came out.

I used OEM parts. I could get cheaper ones, but I figured my bike is my baby, and I don't want to take a chance on a failed part... even if that likelihood is low. Peace of mind for me.

+1 on the fuel pump. Its almost identical across Yamaha FI bikes. I just had to do the same on a 2015 YZ250F because the contact tabs had completely corroded off. It was my brother’s bike stored at my house, and didnt get ridden much. After doing the work I immediately looked up the fuel pump on the FZ1 and the design is mostly identical (not intechangeable) and could fail in the same way. Keep in mind we always use 91+ Octane Non-Ethanol in the dirtbikes (Local Marina Fuel Station) and this still happened.

Additionally, I would probably:
- change all fluids
- seafoam the tank
- look at the brake lines and pads
- make sure the clutch cable is in good condition.

My 2012 has about 17K on the clock and its time for SS Braided lines and pads all around, and I’m going to change the coolant on the next oil change @ 18K.

I was not aware of the stator issue. Is this a part that needs regularly replaced, or just a 1 time deal?

It's the rotor that spins around the stator. It's a one time deal because of a new design. The new design has the magnets encased in the metal. The old design had the magnets just glued on the rotor and they could fly off and destroy the stator as well as potentially cause catastrophic engine damage. It's a pretty easy job.

One time deal with the rotor assembly.
