R1 Shock Options??

Hey guys i just bought a 2006 FZ1. I want to replace the rear shock on my bike with a rebuildable unit. Im looking into going with a R1 shock and need some help with the different options to deal with the shorter length. What should I do?

1. Satan666 adapter? All linkages stay the same with this right? Just bolt in the adapter and a 07+ r1 shock and your done right? Can somebody PM me his e-mail adress?

2. Adjustable dogbone? I like this idea. Im working at a machine shop so i can Mill out whatever length I want in about an hour after work. But the triangle linkage now sits at a different angle, will this change the rates much or is it negligable? The 07 shock will bolt into the stock upper mount and triangle right?

3. Change to R1 dogbone/triangle? Do both have to be replaced to get stock height again or is it just one or the other? How does this affect rates and travel at the wheel?

4. Rebuild stock one? I rebuild alot of Snowmobile and MX bike shocks. I heard of one guy converting stock shock to rebuildable. Whats involved with this? Just a matter of adding a nitrogen valve or more complicated? How is the bearing cap installed in the stock shock, does it have a circlip or is the steel shock body crimped around it? I have some compression adjustable fox reservoirs here lying around i could use to get compression adjustment too.

Why not get the real thing like a Penske 8983! I am running the stock rear shock, its OK for now. Im not on the limit nor doing track-days. Penske make and race Indy cars and there stuff must be equal to Ohlins [the top shit]. Thats what I would upgrade to not some R1 shock. :cowboy:

dude, may i correct you on the part about ohlins..

ohlins shock for FZ1 ain't top of the line yet.. they aren't the TTX grade.

so far only bitubo are top line with their XXF series.. 5 way adjustable..

a rebuilt shock will be nowhere near an aftermarket shock..

the capabilities of a stock shock is being set for a wide variable, able to cater from lightweight riders to heavyweight riders.. adjustments are almost to none. even with a spring change and rebuild, the variable is still wide..

but an aftermarket shock is spec to your weight and riding preference(track, tour, daily ride, etc). you can feel the difference with each single adjustment you make, due to the fact that the variable limits are reduced.

Not interested in spending 10 times as much for an aftermarket shock. Plus its not a complicated modification to do. Seems to be alot of confusion about what is the best way to fix the length issue, but all the soloutions seem fairly simple. I just want some input on which way to go about it.

Also Penske is no better then ohlins or no better then the R1 shock for that matter. Shock performance is about 80% valving, 15% setup and 5% brand. I just want one that i can rebuild/revalve to my liking and the R1 shock seems like the cheapest way to do it.

Maybe I'll just machine an eyelet for it thats a little longer and do it that way. Are the eyelets just screwed on on the R1 shocks?

The Penske and Ohlins may be about equal but unless that shock is off the 06 LE it's just a spectator in the ball park watching the championship game between Ohlins and Penske.

modified/revalved shock does not have any resale value, should you wish to change the bike couple of years down the road. but aftermarket shock, you either can let go together with the bike, OR you can choose to de-kit the bike and put it up for sale separately.

perhaps you can talk to racetech about getting their shims and valvings.. stock r1 shock are already gas-charged so there's no need for a nitrogen valve.

Yeah i was refering to the Stock FZ1 shock about adding the nitrogen valve. Some guy on here modded his into a rebuildable but not much details on how.

So whats the deal about the triangle and dogbone with the R1 shock? If i get all three (shock, triangle and dogbone) can i just bolt on with stock ride height? I've searched and found posts related to this but cant really seem to find a clear answer.

I think you need longer dog bones; but if I remember correctly it changes the the rate of movement to/of the shock as the swingarm moves.

And if I remember correctly you need to drill out the top eye hole to make it all fit. Something like that...

Can I be any more vague? Probably.

Good luck with the project.

not quite possible.. the stock is a 1 piece with the gas chamber right smack in the middle. there's no piggyback valving unlike the R1 stock shock..

I used to own an R1, so I can say that the stock shocks isn't really that great either.

It has better damping properties than the Gen 2 shock (which, IMO is complete and utter crap, even when put up against the Gen 1's), but it fades pretty fast too. Now, I could attribute that to the proximity of the reservoir to the cat in the Y-pipe, but hey, the FZ is a pretty hot bike too. It's only a matter of time before the heat gets transferred through the shock.

I'm looking at the Ohlins YA-628 or 906. Prob the 906 because of the remote reservoir, so I have to option of hanging it off the pillion peg holders, away from the heat.

I have an 06 FZ1-N and fitted a an 06 R1 rear shock. IMO it tranformed the handling of the bike. It's OK talking about fitting Penske or Ohlins and how good they are but lets face it most NORMAL riders would never reach the ability needed to use there capabilities especially on the road. Lets face it people fit them so they can say they've got one and because they can and want too.
I fitted a stock R1 shock with an adjustable dogbone, the whole conversion cost around £60 all in which for the improvement is excellent value for money.
There is one thing to consider when fitting an R1 shock and that is you'll need to reposition the rectifier were as if you fit a penske or the like it a straight swap ie on messing about.

The bottom line is if you can afford it and you want one or you race buy Penske or Ohlins, if your on a budget or you just like value for money fit a R1 shock.

R1 shock a good solution..

hi guys..who know my bike just know what I'm going to say.. Whit the money spent for her customize I can buy more than another new fz1 so my rear shock choice was not for money. Today only two guys ''touch'' my honey. I tried a lot before meet those guys but today I'm sure that when they talk to me,they does only on my interes. One of they, only cure electronic and suspensions sides..he was world sbk cham wild card and ride sport's bike was all his life untill an accident that chose everythings:-( my original intention was change the stock shock whit an ohlins unity first to have ''more'' on track days(the engine and the chassis of our babys are to much for the stock shock!)and second to have a piggy back unity to regenerate it after 5/7mil km when oil and gas inside mix together and the suspension loose performance.. He is an ohlins dealer so was his interes sale to me a new stuff but did another thing. Gave to me a 05R1 shock like a present after a total regeneration whit ohlins hydraulics and mechanics parts from andreani group the official ohlins italian dealer.. They considered my weigh and my way of riding. Was just to try.. 300 for the job against 1000 for a new ohlins unity.. It fit perfectly,I can feel all the clics and the traction is great on the road as an tracks.. These is my experience.. I'm not a motogp rider and a customized R1 unity works very good on my baby on all the situations. ;-)

:2cents:

I had a '98 R1 track bike for many years. The suspension was stock, but re sprung and re-valved by Lindemann Engineering. That suspension was as good or better than anything on the track. Bar none.

Point is, modern sport bike shocks and forks can be modded to be every bit as good as the most expensive suspensions available.

Yes the R1 shock is rebuildable, however the cost to rebuild with Racetech or similar products means you might as well go for an aftermarket shock designed for the FZ1.

I disagree. I can have an OEM shock re valved for a fraction of the cost of an aftermarket shock.

Just curious, how much?

Just had look on Racetech website. Spring, valving, oil..etc

your looking @US450 just for components + shipping , and this doesnt include labour & servicing = this maybe $150-200 depending.

There maybe cheaper components you can source from a different manufacturer?.
