Air Box Mod Question

I've searched all over the forums and cannot find the answer to this.. I know about how to do the Lars air box mod, but I don't have a power commander and I'm afraid that my bike will be running lean. I was wondering, if I just cut off the scoop part of the air box but leave the hole the same size, would I avoid running lean, and would I notice any improvement? I was thinking that the scoop adds some restriction to airflow and that cutting if off should allow air to flow more freely without running lean.

I wouldn't bother tbh. I'd say go for the slipon first, I noticed a bit of a difference there with the engine being more responsive, and a little more go.

I think that the airbox mod alone won't really make any difference, but I'm sure there are others on here that could clarify this.

Many people are running the airbox mod and a slip on with no problems at all. These bikes run very rich in stock form. I had this configuration for awhile along with modded flies and no cat. No doubt it will run better with the PCIII, but if you want to do the mods now and add it later you can with no problems at all. Somehere in here are graphs proving it, just keep searching.

I found this thread helpful but still can not find the graphs....

I did the airbox mod only because I love the roar of the intake. Makes the bike seem more beast like. I never felt like it provided any real performance boost so I don't think you need a PC.

Ok cool thanks guys. I actually do have a Yoshi TRC slip on. I also did block the ais.. I'm not sure if that affect how rich/lean the bike runs. I'm just still a bit skeptical, I don't want to just cut open my airbox then be forced to buy a PC if it starts to run lean..

I ended up doing it earlier this afternoon. I just cut the scoop off, not Lars' mod, so the intake hole is only slightly bigger but has zero restriction, and I'm not worried about running lean. I definitely notice better throttle response. The bike seems to pull better from 4k up. I already had a 16t sprocket, Yoshi slip on and the header cat gutted, so I think this was the finishing touch to pull those together, other than PC. I'm usually in 3rd and 4th in the twisties and my only complaint about the bike is when accelerating out of a corner from 4k the bike felt sluggish, but this has definitely helped with that problem.

Swiped my finger on the inside of the end of my exhaust and wiped up some black soot.. which means my bike was running rich. So if anything, doing the airbox mod moved it closer toward optimal running conditions!

If you decide to get back in there and finish the air box mod (which I suggest) you ought to zip tie or pull the secondary flies. You will not be disapointed! It will give you better throttle response. Your fuel/air ratio will still be ok, andin no danger of hurting the bike. Then when you do get a PC you can start with the stage 5 maps.

Thanks Rx. I'm actually gonna wait to see if my pipe accumulates more black soot, meaning it's rich, before messing anything else. If it still is then I'll definitely cut open the airbox more. As for the flies I've heard mixed responses. I've read quite a few posts of people saying it'll boost the top end but take away from the bottom..

Trimmed flies help boost the mid range, and I feel a marked improvement from 3k through to redline with the right map. I only did mine last weekend, and im still amazed by it. It's transformed the bikes character into the sportsbike it should have been. It's now on the suspension limits for the power delivery!

What he said! I feel like it evened out the power by spreading it through the rpms better. If there was any loss it was minimal and overshadowed by the increase and smoothness. If your in doubt just zip tie them open and if you don't like it a simple snip will put it back. However i must say that probably 80% of the people that zip them end up just pulling them. I tried trimmed first and felt nothing so i just pulled em and never looked back. Let us know how you like it if you do decide to try it. And use the search button before tackling the project. The correct size screw driver and a torch are a must and even with that I still stripped one out of the 8. Had to use a sharper screw driver and a rubber mallet with a lot more heat to get it out. Live and learn.

Thanks guys I'll definitely look into doing that as well. The bike is already a beast but after every mod I keep finding that I want more and more... modding is addicting like a drug lol

air box mod

waste of time doing air box mod (only for induction noise) truth is in dyno runs standard air box is better.
I run standard air box, PCV with custom tune, racefit growler pipe, K & N airfilter,
16t front sprocket = awesome:tup:

Bike has been around in essentially the same form since 2006. The air box subject has been debated in the forums for years. It is definitely NOT obvious that it is a waste of time as you indicate. The "awesomeness" you are experiencing could probably be improved significantly with additional mods. A properly designed full exhaust system will make a huge improvement in mid range power over a slip on. The latest and greatest mod seems to be the ecu flash that Ivan is offering. Among many other things it removes fuel cut on decel issues as well as the low gear power restrictions the factory left us with. A power commander is still needed to fine tune the fueling. You might want read up on all the power mods here and particularly on the fz1oa site. You are a bit "late" to the game otherwise. . . .

Eurban you can have as many mods as you like, the question was asked about cutting of the standard airbox as i said dose nothing if anything upsets AFR.
Induction noise yes sounds great.
Cut airbox v standard airbox dyno run stuff all FACT!

I thought this quote from the link eurban posted says it all:

"There really isn't any other way to get more air to the motor.

This airbox is really a piece of crap....

The 2001 - 2005 model was a much better design.... I could get away with the stock opening... and nothing else will make more power
(the opening was big enough)

The problem with the new bike's airbox is that the air has to change direction too much. (180 degrees)
Anything that causes the air to change direction at wide open throttle.... (high speed air stream) will cause it to lose inertia and makes it more difficult to make it's way into the engine.

Kawasaki has the best designed airboxes that I have ever seen.
Are you listening Yamaha ?

Moving the cables is not going to make a difference to hp production, but if it makes you happy to do it...go ahead

The old bike's air supply didn't have to change direction significantly, so it has less intake noise and can get away with a smaller inlet size.

Ivan"

Today's Mods Air box/AIS & Zip Tied Flies

Just bought a 2007 FZ1 with 42,000 miles in perfect condition on Tuesday. Great bike but felt very weak and choppy under 5000 RPMs, a little disappointed until today! Took a copy of all the great advise of this forum and spent 3 hours in the garage today doing the airbox with K&N mod, plugged the AIS and Zip Tied the flies wide open (disconnected the arm).......WOW very nice improvement under 5000 and love the sound of the intake! May just leave the stock pipe on and gut the Cat next?? Also dropped the triple clamps 8mm, removed the center stand....nice improvement!

Currently own a 2000 RSV-R Aprila, so got to have that low end torque and now I'm very happy with the FZ1. Guess I need the Ivan ECU to do power wheelies next???
