fully synthetic or semi synthetic oil

hi all i am in a dilema about the type of oil to put in my fz1 2007 model it is on 5000 miles now and i want to do a service ready for the summer but i dont know what grade of oil to use i have spoken to a dealer and they reconmend yamlube fully synthetic oil but i have read that semi is as good if not better
please help

It really does not matter as long as you change it and the filter every 4k miles.
It's as simple as : Clean oil-good, dirty oil -bad

:ditto:

I use Motul Semi synthetic and still change at 4000 km, filter and oil every time. The full sythetic is much pricier than the semi. Even good old Dino will work; As long as it is motorcycle specific oil.

For a while I always used Motul 5100 in my bikes and it was great. Out of curiosity, I ordered a case of Amsoil to test it and wasn't as happy. On a suggestion from a friend, I've started using Shell Rotella T synthetic and have been using that for the last 6 months or so.

I thought the manual says 6K miles? Also it says to change the filter every other oil change doesn't it? I think the best has to be Amsoil but way too expensive no way I'm doing that. I started buying the Walmart filter and I found a place that sells Yamalube for the same price Walmart sells the Mobil auto oil so I'll be using the Yamalube now, but for before that I bought the Mobil oil from the local Autozone and paid the ridiculous $10/quart.

It actually would depend more on the type/quality of oil you put in. The cheapest Dino oil is going to need changes more often than the expensive full synthethics like Mobil 1 7500 mile oil. With the Rotella, I change it when I winterize the bike, again in the following summer after 5k miles then again when I winterize unless I've already hit another 5k and changed it again.

If I have few miles on an oil change and winter is now here, I drain the good stuff, leaving the filter on, put that in a clean container and put it in the basement. I fill the bike with new cheap Dino oil to sit over the winter, then after running out the first tank of (Stabil'ized) fuel in the spring, drain the Dino and put back my synthetic from the saved jug.

All oil changes save the last mentioned one include a new oil filter. :D

I suppose that makes sense, if you use cheap stuff change it more often....the oil filter is cheap enough to do every oil change too so might as well :)

What filter are you using? There are some after market ones that are not recommended. ;)

I use the Purolator Pure One PL14612. I typically go clear the shelf at Walmart twice a year. I get them on sale for $3 - $4 each. :D Since these fit ALL FZ and R# bikes, having them on the shelf covered the FZ6's, the FZ6R and the FZ1 (now two FZ1s!!!)

For those that do not want to search, here is a list of filters that do fit:

I was just telling you what I do, and I know it is overkill. I have always erred on the cautious side when it comes to my machines. The only proof (that it is worth it) that I have is 2- 25+ year machines in my stable that don't burn oil and run just fine (electrical problems for 1 aside). For the two to three oil changes a year that I have to do (on this mileage) it certainly won't break me. I am sure that you will be fine following the factory suggested schedule with whatever oil you see fit.

I use K&N filter P/N: KN-204.
So much easier with the 17mm nut fixed to the end of it.

Oh, I use Castrol ACT-EVO X-TRA 4T synthetic blend oil(10W30).

Ah so it's YOU that buys them all!

Hey if you have 2 25+ year machines I'm not so sure it's overkill, maybe you got something there Lee...
