Hi all, I've had my 06-R6 since 2008 and absolutely love it. Easily the best looking 600 on the market ;) , but it's not really too comfortable as a commute bike, especially when on London's congested roads! Been looking at the FZ1N for awhile now... (has to be naked) and just had a few questions.

I've been riding for almost a decade but i've never been interested in the tech/mechanics, so I'm pretty ignorant on it all... leathered up with a modded R6, people often assume i'll have a clue, which leads to lots of blagging by me lol

anyway... my current ride with some questions below pic...

:( <edit - put as attachment>

1. I've heard people say I should go for 2008 FZ1 onwards due to sudden injection issues??

2. ^^if buying 06/07, I should check for a power commander + dyno time(wtf is that lol?)

3. I forget, but there was a 3. Damn :/

Thanks for your time, and apologies for the random waffle :)

Cool, so the 07 would be a safe bet too I assume...

If the fix for 06 models isn't too pricey(?) I'd be ok with one of those

Frankly most people wouldn't even notice the throttle issue on the '06. And if you wanted it completely eliminated you'd need Ivan's FCE.

Not sure what "pricey" means to you. Twenty bucks is pricey to me, but like Tony says, many wouldn't even notice the "snatch" and if you did I think the FCE from Ivan is I think like $200 bucks. Don't quote me on that cause I was a GenI owner and only had to worry about jetting, not fuel injection.

Yeah, then it sounds like something i may already be used to with my R6, a twitchy throttle which is anything but great around town but you do get used to it. That said, i really want a smoother/more comfy ride, and i suspect even an 06 un-modded would give me that.

I'll be sure to test ride before buying

I'll give you the Gen2 FZ1 history as I know it.

*Yamaha released the 2nd Generation FZ1 in 2006
*for 2007' Yamaha revised the fuel mapping and reduced the rear spring rate for a better ride
*2008-2012 is simply minor changes to fueling.

In my opininion, you can buy any year Gen2 and be happy commuting. The throttle snatch is really only a problem when trying to ride smooth in the curves while hauling anus. You just learn to never completely close the throttle and drag the rear brake to counter it. I purchased the FCE and it was well worth the $$$ to me. The combo of the power commander and FCE makes the bike easier to ride buy allowing more power from idle on up. Without a doubt in my mind, the best mod available is a replacement shock with height adjustment. That is the only mod I couldn't live without.

one correction... FI was improved from 07 onwards. It was enough improved for it to not be a problem. The main change was slowing down the rate of opening the flies. Not sure what later year FI changes exactly did...

Hey, I'm Marthy (FZ6R-Forum) and I have a crush on a 2010 Raven FZ1, $6200. Seams like a good deal to me... only 3K miles on it. No braking period BS to deal with...lol

Anything special I should know? I'm more concern about maintenance than driving it. Tire wear, chain & sprocket life expectancy. I've been spending the last hour or two looking around the forum about pro and con. (Windscreen, seat, exhaust mod...)

I've been riding since I'm 6 yo, took a long brake from 17 to 38 then got my 6R. Over 20K miles later I'm still happy with the 6R with all the mod. (Touring stuff, exhaust, PCV, FZ6 cams...)

Kind of just wondering... I'll still keep he 6R for touring or my wife might ride it.

For what I want it sounds like the 06 would also be fine with no mods. I'll keep the power comm and FCE in mind as future purchases. Perhaps I'll get lucky and find one with them already fitted!

Cheers for the heads up & help from all you guys. I'll be back with pics once I've got it... gonna sell the R6 first.

One other item that the Gen 2 owners are neglecting to mention on the '06 model besides the throttle snatch.

There have been issues with the frame welds cracking on the 06 models, more so than later models, compromising the integrity of the frame.

You are correct, but it's a very small percentage of the bikes that have experienced the welds cracking. Most have been '06 models, but I did hear of an '07 or two that also had the issue. Anyway it's an easy enough check to perform and quite evident if it's cracked. As far as I know Yamaha has replaced the cracked frames even if the bikes were no longer under warranty. Here's a picture of the weld that fails:

There are alot of OTT drama queens out there who have never ridden the 06 FZ1 they just go by what a few others have said. I own an 06 model and have done 24,000kms so far and absolutely love it. I brought it stock and noticed a slight hesitation in the fuelling around 5-6rmp, after adjusted the throttle cable it basically dialed it out to barely noticable. Please note - there are owners of 07-10 models that have reported this fuelling issues/ snatch.

I don't know what plans you have for the FZ1 but i pressume you do some mods and release the full potential of the livery like 99% of all FZ1 owners. With a few fairly cheap mods, PC3 or V and a slip-on or F/S this bike can be turned into a 150hp@rear.

Don't be put off or fooled by year these bikes havent changed since 06 till now and will be unchanged untill Yamaha ever release the Gen3?.

I ride an 09' and there is a slight flat spot just about 4000 RPMs if you are cruising. If you are accelerating it is not noticeable. Nothing with all my years of riding, worth altering. I love this bike bone stock, except for the seat. The only thing it could use is a gear indicator light on the dash.

FYI, If you ride around town in 45MPH speed zones, you only need 2nd and 3rd gear. 1st is strictly for parking lots and stop signs.

Thanks for the info, i don't imagine i'll really be able to notice / mind the minor issues. I bought my R6 with mods in place but have never seriously considered trying to tune the ride for speed/comfort, all i know is it's immense fun accelerating in 2nd/3rd, and i'd hate for that to be too different with the FZ1.

Unfortunately, in London you don't often leave 30mph :( though there are some parts you can still have a bit of fun ;)

Because of the more upright seating position of the FZ1 and a whole lot more grunt down low and midrange, I think you would find the FZ1 much more fit for comuting. My "08" has been anything from an around town runner to a 5000 mile tourer (although I'll admit after over 5000 miles of continuous riding I was ready for a break) and I've had a great time on it. I've had a lot of other bikes but the FZ1 is right up at the top for overall satisfaction.

20 miles or less and i'm very uncomfortable and needing a break on the R6 lol. I consider myself a fairly fit 33 year old too... Football, tennis and the gym yet i still find my bike knackering!

Quite envious of you guys now, hopefully it doesn't take me too long to get this sorted :)

I went and chat with the salesman... someone has given a deposit on the bike (2010 with 3K miles on it) few days ago but never called back. I might still have a shot at it... mad at myself. You snooze, you loose... Keeping my fingers cross!
