I haven't posted much here but have been lurking for a while. Bought a 2001 FZ with blown motor for $850 last Oct and have her rebuilt and ready to go. Here's what I bought:

I bought this motor for $675 delivered on E-bay:

Valves checked on 18K mile donor:

Old motor out:

New motor in:

Forks off for rebuild:

New main jets installed, reset floats to 14mm, shimmed jet needle, reset pilots to 2.5 turns out.

All back together and running great! Can't wait 'till spring!

Thanks for the pics and the story of your rebuild there. Love that Yamaha blue. I'm sure you're going to have a lot of fun come the Spring and you'll have a great reliable bike now for sure  Not too mention you didn't have to spend too much $$$ for it :D

Nice build!

I am curious about that all in one tail light, how bright are the turn signals? I am really interested in pickup up a smoked grey one for my 02FZ1, but i want the indicators to be bright enough for day time riding. I currently have some small LED ones that look cool but are hard to see during the day.

I really dig the tail light on mine. The LEDS are super bright and the way they cycle with the blinker function is awesome even in direct sun. I'm not sure who the manufacture is as they were on it when I bought the bike.

Where about ru in NM?

Lived in Rio Rancho last year. Moved, and I'm now living up north in Cebolla.

Thanks, perhaps I will move forward on getting those for mine.

Very cool! Great bike for little money. Congrats!

I've not seen one with a blown engine before. I wonder what the PO did to get to that extreme? Nice work!

PO told me the oil pump seized. I suspect there was more to it than that but I'll never know. In my experience, no matter the type of motor, there's usually warning signs way before something bad like that happens. He probably ignored them. The motor had only 27K on it when it went.

I tend to agree with you. These motors are very reliable so either it was abused (bouncing of the rev limiter???) or not maintained properly.

When I saw the bike posted on Craigslist I recognized that a PO had put some money into it (IE. Sargent seat, chin fairing, Pazzo levers, heated grips, sliders, integrated LED lights). I couldn't believe my eyes at how good of shape it was in minus the blown motor. It needed to be back on the road...:flash:

Do you know where the lower fairing piece came from ?

Near as I can tell, they were a standard Yamaha accessory that cost about $450 new.

As a follow up... the reason I don't have the chin fairing installed yet is it took a little damage from the fall when the engine detonated. Nothing serious, just a little crack by one of the mounting brackets and a missing damper. It also has a little scrape that exposes the white plastic. I'm just going to cover the white spot with some flat black paint since its on the bottom anyway. The crack will be fixed with some fiberglass.
