Looking at picking up an '06

I am looking at picking up an '06 with 11k miles on it. Is there anything I should be specifically aware of or look for? The mileage is making me a little nervous, but is this a problem on these bikes? What major maintenance should have been done or will need to be completed in the near future? The owner says the bike has been well cared for, never dropped, ect. The current (2nd owner) has had the bike this year and put only 1500 miles on it. The previous owner supposedly was easy on it, just using it for highway cruises. Thank you in advance and I look forward to becoming an FZ1 owner.

1st, :welcome:

1) Ask if there are any maintenance records...

2)Inspect the chain, sprockets and tires and see of they've been abused or need replacing. Is the chain adjusted properly? Are the tires at the correct PSI? How much life is left on the tires? A good set of tires with the mount and balance is a fair amount of money to put forth after just buying a bike. What might seem like small things all point to neglect and, IMHO, lower the value of the bike.

3) Check that the clutch and throttle operate smoothly and with rapid response. Any delay in the levers means the owner didn't lube and maintain the cables.

4) What mods, if any, have been done to the bike? Are the stock parts included in the deal?

5) Being an '06 with the more pronounced fuel cutoff issue, does it have an Ivan's FCE installed?

Too many failed inspection points? Low-ball the price and point them out politely and if he doesn't drop his asking price, walk away. Leave your number, he will call you in a day or two.

The miles are low. No worries about that. Always when buying used, unless you personally know the PO, change out all the fluids and do your own chain maintenance. Always check the tire pressures before you ride it. You'll want to work on the suspension to match your weight/riding style. At 11k, get a set of plugs which are due at 12k anyway. Valve clearance check isn't until 26k.

How much is this person asking for it? Pics? We're here to help you make the right choice. :D

I've got an '06 with 27,000 on it, runs likes a like a champ! These motors can easily go voer 100,000 and beyond. 11K is nothing if it is a well cared for bike.

Thank you for the responses. The bike I am looking at has the following:

Brand new Michelin Pilot Road 2CT tires. (both front and rear) - 1500 miles.
- Frame sliders and axle sliders - BIKE HAS NEVER BEEN DROPPED.
- Fender eliminator kit
- Yoshimura TRC Stainless slip on
- Clear Pro-Grip tank pad

I do not think the FCE was installed.

All thoughts/comments welcome.

Yes you should definitely check for cracks at the main frame welds on either side of the tank. If this bike is one of the ones with the frame defect it would likely have shown itself by 11k miles. No particular reason to worry about future cracking if it looks good now . . . .
Fueling has been marginally improved over the years but as mentioned the 06s are particularly snatchy so figure on an FCE (or perhaps a remapped ECU) The rear shock spring on the 06s was overly heavy for most riders use so you may find it necessary to change springs (or better yet the entire shock). Later years had a better spring rate but still the same crappy stock shock.
I purchased my 06 last year for $3.4K which was a bit of a steal but there are good deals out there so make sure you don't pay too much. Many sellers are in shock about how little their bikes are worth. Have fun!
