One key for all locks?

Interesting concept .... but I just put on a Yamaha helmet lock which comes with an identical looking Yamaha key but I only need two keys when I'm riding, the ignition key and the helmet lock key, the rest of the key ring with house keys is in my tank bag. I just painted the helmet key with some red highlights to differentiate it from the ignition key. Works fine in this case. The idea of a single key is very appealing, but not worth spending a lot of money on to implement it, imo:

I sent them an email not only about the Yamaha keys but also Toyota. I have a Taco with a trailer and a need for 5 of their products for this single application. ;)

For the bike, I'm thinking about a helmet lock, cable lock and a padlock. Different applications.

I would think a local locksmith would be able to rekey your helmet lock relatively cheap...This way your original key would work all locks on the bike.
 
Unfortunately, that's not what I've run into - stealership was a zero as far as helping - figured they'd at least know a locksmith with the yamaha lock kits, but zero help from them.

Been to the locksmith I've had re-key several house door locks prior to installing and he told me its simple if you have the parts, which he doesn't.

I'm still using two keys.

I know it's been a couple of days but you can do it yourself:

I installed the Yamaha helmet lock on my Gen 2 and re-key the cylinder myself (saved me $36 vs the locksmith)

Saw this when you posted it earlier......I may try this if I can't get it done by a 'smith using all 5 tumblers.


What you were able to do prob depends on the numbers of the two keys involved. If my two keys don't share three numbers, I suspect I'd have to drop more of those plates making the lock more susceptible to being overcome.

I just looked at my two key numbers and they share just one number, so I don't think this would work out with the two keys I have.

Just out of curiosity, could you check your key numbers and see if your two keys share three numbers?
 
That kinda of blows my theory.....the two wafers are prob the wafers for the different numbers between the keys?

Since my keys share only one number, guess i'd have to drop more wafers than you did...

I have one more locksmith place I want to try - next week after it drys out here and I get some deadlines out the door.

Yamaha has at least two "keyways" for their FZ products. If the key you want to use for all of the looks will physically fit in the cylinder you want to have changed then you should be fine. However, you may find that the keyways are mirror images of each other and it is then not just a matter of swapping pins in the cylinder.
