As most of you know I've been going through a few changes recently. I recently moved in with my mom in Florida. I bought a 10 X 14 foot shed for her back yard and got most of her stuff in the garage into the shed. We can now park both her Prius and my bigass Tundra inside. It's a little tight but it works. My initial plan with the shed was to put the garage stuff to the back of it and put my 2 bikes in the front.

The biggest issue with this however is that I'll have to ride over some uneven graded grass for about 30 feet to get from her driveway, through the gate to her back yard, and then to the shed. For the members here who park their bikes outside year round I was wondering what you use to protect the bike? A certain kind of cover, etc.

I used to park mine outside. I used a heavy duty Yamaha cover and it worked ok. i would say that you will need to add water repelent to the cover b/c in a heavy rain the bike will still get wet. Make sure to get one big enough to go all the way to the ground to protect your chain and other lower parts. If storeing for a long peroid of time I would put something on the ground under the bike and tuck it up in the cover to keep out moisture and bugs (I had a HUGE spider get in mine one time and I thought I was going to have the big one LOL). I just used a heavy duty tarp.

Norm I would imagine that the Florida climate is not ideal for storing bikes outside. Even with a cover the humidity might cause some rust issues eventually. Is there any way that you can put down some pavers to create a path from the shed to the gate...just a thought. This way you can ride the bike and not worry about wet grass and dropping the bike.

Mine stays outside year round under a carport and I use a tourmaster elite cover, waterproof, breathable, lockable, nice thick cover. Just remember you will have to be EXTRA anal about polish, and lubricants, to keep it nice. Mine pretty much gets a full spa treatment when I get home from riding before I cover it up. :)

Norm, can you have a concrete walkway put in to the shed from the driveway? This will let you drive to and from smoothly. Get some quotes. I can also ask my cousin Lauri is her husband can do this for you. He works cheap and is 5 minutes away. :D

These are expensive but I have seen some good reports on them. Unlike one of those small Home Depot sheds, this can be moved without fuss.

CycleShell Enclosure - Outdoor Motorcycle Cover - Protection

Yea, I just found this site after I made the post. They look awesome.

Eric and Tony, yea pavers may be the way to go but I still don't like the grading to and from the shed, especially for the C14. It's too heavy a bike and can get away from you real easy. Maybe re-grading the area. I'm warming up to the idea of that cycleshell though. It's expensive but completely encloses the bike and I can leave them on the driveway: easy in, easy out.

Yea, those cycle enclosures will do the job as well. Just not sure how well they'll hold up in a strong storm/hurricane. At that point I guess you can somehow squeeze the bikes into the garage for safety.

Just what I was thinking Tony! I'm going to order one in the next few days I think, unless I come up with a better option.

+1 on Eric's idea for looking at concrete. I don't know what the terrain is like getting to and through the gate etc. but it is worth looking into. Do you have any room in the garage in front of the prius? If you do you could do what I used to do with my FZ1 in the Winter, I would park it horizontally in front of our Honda CRV, it was tight but worked. Would you put the bikes in the backyard in the CycleShell if you go that direction?

I think I'll actually leave them on the driveway, behind my car so my mom can always get out with her Prius. Since I'll probably use my bike much more than the car I can always just move the shelter over to the grass when I pull my car out.

I'm still trying to picture how that big-arse Tundra fits in that garage! :D You have to post a pic of this cause it has GOT to be tight in there!

The grade of the place can be changed and the pathway of concrete wide enough to allow you and the bike plenty of room to go and plant both feet along the way. Since the gate is on the left, there's plenty of room to install the "motorcycle driveway" and you can either come from the road straight in or expand the walkway and continue around the corner through the gate right to the shed.

Here's the overhead without and with the walkway... :D

Don't back over your bikes :)

When I was in an apartment I used the heavy duty cover from Cycle Gear.

If its going to be stored more than 2 months fuel stabilizer is a good idea.

Being that FL is warm I wouldn't bother with a battery tender.

Eric it is an extremely tight fit with the Tundra. Believe it or not I think there's still room on the Prius side for the FZ1 to stand beside it. The C14 is another story. I'll take a pic tonight of the 2 cars in the garage. Yea, maybe the Tundra should go outside but I just bought it and want to keep that nice shiny red color. I'm afraid the Florida sun will make it fade. So many tough decisions...thanks for all the suggestions. One of them will work.

Car outside. Bikes inside.

The prius would feel more at home with the fuel efficiency of the bike than the gas hog (very nice btw )
