Here is my before pic 03, 16km, dropped...

Here is where I got it to last winter. Made it drivable, plus some small mods.

The forks were straight, but I got a deal on these parts I couldn't refuse, so now I'm in the middle of installing a set of them.

Had a welder friend of mine modify this 03 R1 top clamp to fit bar risers, and to fit my fz1 ignition switch correctly. Done with the 03 clamp you have to remove the steering lock from the frame.

Also had some powder thrown on these parts. Its a medium gloss black, close to a match on the frame. I'm quite happy with it.

The PO had one of these when I bought it, so I'm making it work.

My welder friend does titanium work, so I got him to weld on this bracket so i can keep my centre stand.

Had the frame side steering stop extended a bit, it made contact, but only slightly. Also shows where I filed down the steering stops on the R1 clamp.

Hey Bluenoser...I assume you're a Nova Scotian by the screen name...do you still live here now? If so we should hook up for a ride sometime, I'm in Halifax.
I've got the same exact bike (minus all the cool mods you're doing now), had it for 2 months now and really like it. I'd love to throw an R1 front end on some day...looks like you know the procedure now.

Yea, a lot of work went into that part, they welder friend of mine cut the R1 ignition mount off, welded on the FZ1 mount. Also I got him to move the riser mount holes a bit inboard where they should be, filled in the existing holes, and brace up the inside.

My Gen2 risers I cut the bolts off shorter and cut new threads. I really want it to look like a factory install, so I dont want spacers under my risers.

I'm actually in Dartmouth too I just say Halifax most of the time for those not from the area...
The FZ's I've seen with R1 forks are a big improvement, looking forward to seeing the finished product. What are you doing with your second set of forks by the way? Any chance you want to sell them? Or possibly a trade for a set of lower fairings?

I was thinking about selling them, or holding on to them for a CBX project I have on the back burner.

I already have a set of lower fairings, but am thinking about modifying them. If I can think of a good design, I may be up for trading.

I'm looking forward to the finished product too... Away for 2 weeks on Vancouver Island, home for two, than off to Cold Lake for 2 weeks... Hard time getting it all together in time for summer!
 
Nice job, can you post closer photos of the hand guard you're using, I like to install one on mine, which brand did you use?

I really dont have many pictures of the guards, If I was home I'd take a few for ya.

They are a factory Suzuki Vstrom 650 kit. Comes with mounting hardware, fairly cheap. Some modification required. I believe that you can search the forum for more info on them.

They look like Buell Ulysses guards to me. I've thought about installing them myself, my last bike was a Ulysses and the combination of hand guards and heated grips made for much more comfortable cold weather riding that's for sure. Not sure if I like the look on the FZ...I'd throw them on for long trips though.

I can hardly stand sitting in my hotel room out here... I desperately want to be home working on the bike...

I am thinking of hand guards to relocate the turn signals not so much concerned about the cold, I found these on ebay I might give them a try.

Got my R6 shock in the mail, turned out to be rather damaged... Powdercoat was torn up quite badly.

Removed the spring and had it sent out for powder.

There are a couple other issues, so I think I'm going to wait on the install and fix them.

It doesn't look too bad, what else is wrong with it?
I put an ad up for one of those on the local racing site (ARL) and thought I had scored a sweet deal for $20 from a guy right here in Dartmouth until he sent me the picture...it was an R6 S shock...damn it
 
Someone clamped it in a vice without soft jaws, tore up quite badly, and the rubber was tore up quite bad.

I'm not a fan of drilling the rubber out and installing the adapter, I'm researching to see if the whole rubber/bushing assy can be pressed out and install a stock non modified one. I hate to scrap this shock, its quite nice.

I'll have some "hat" bushings made up and install the same diameter upper bolt that the r6 uses.
