Cheap(er) Oil & Filter Change

Public transport costs heaps here too!!!!! $4.00 for 2 hours to take a train or tram 10km to Melbourne. Weekly is cheaper. Overall, very costly. They have us by the B..ls!!!:jaw drop::jaw drop: Cheers.

They sure do!

As Margaret Thatcher once said "Socialists are happy until they run out of other people's money.”

It's all fine and good to complain about the prices of things in Australia, but the economies are so different that you can't just say 'X costs $__ here and in America it's only $__'

Comparing Canadian to Australian statistics, the average worker earns between $70,000 and $80,000 AUD a year. By contrast, the average worker in Canada will earn between $30,000 and $40,000 CAD. I believe it's about the same average earnings in the US of A as it is in Canada, maybe a bit higher.

So while you may pay more, you also make more than double on average. I bet it balances out. Since our dollars are on par, buy things from here as often as you can, you make twice as much as us anyway!

And here I am complaining about my $18 Wal-Mart oil change that was $13 last year.

I use Rotella T in all my bikes, and either the Super Tech or Pure One filter.
The filters have doubled in price, but I'm still under $20.

I did my oil, filter and coolant change today. Motul 5100 10W40 at $70.00 for 4 litres (1.05 US Gallons) Yamaha filter $23.00 and Shell coolant $20.00 for 2 litres. I thought I did well!!! Some Motul oils ran over $120 for 4 litres. Most quality oils are in this $ range.
That's AUD$. They really know how to charge $$ here in Australia. I don't know what you pay in the US but here's a few recent ones - Bike registration for the year - $584 (car is more). Speed fine 6kph over - $153. New FZ1N - $16,500 Plus on road costs (Stamp Duty alone at $700 plus Rego.) Not whinging - were used to being ripped off!!!!!:jaw drop::jaw drop:

You are welcome to America.... ;) Should you desire anyway. :D

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Ya know, I've always wondered about when you are still under Yamaha warranty. I would much rather change my own o-i-l, but I do not want to have my warranty (and Yamaha Extended Warranty) voided.

What to do? I never investigated this issue, and reading this thread brought the subject back into my melon.

if your in the states you should be fine as long as it doesnt cause the problem, the specific law starts with soething like macfergeson or something. but it basically says that any part or accessorie shall not void a warentee unless it directly causes the problem.
RW
so if you ruined your clutch because you used auto oil you would not be able to get it fixed under warentee but if your headlights stopped working the previous would not effect getting serviced under warrentee.

also please note i am a goldsmith not a lawyer so feel free to ignore me or imform me if i am wrong etc.

I would like to get $70,000 to $80,000 dollars per year,There are a lot of us in Australia who don`t get anything near that, even if we did why should we pay twice as much for something out of japan or elsewhere

Why indeed. All I'm saying is that it's all well and good that you Australians whinge about how much you pay but there's more to it than just that.

Australia's minimum wage is nearly $30,000 AUD a year, almost double what our minimum wage workers make over here in Canada. California is the same as well, under $15,000 a year.

Just sayin' :D

The reason why we whinge is because approx 10yrs ago, 45cents US equalled one aussie dollar, they said this is why the cost difference was double, but now 1 aussie $ =1 US dollar we are still paying double for most things [imported] "Why"

I definitely agree on this one. Fisherman322 is right about income here. I know the US has and is having a real tough time and I sympathize. These are not exact stats. but an average house in Melbourne cost $500,000. The average mortgage is $300,000 (alot more for some). We have 4 main banks. They do and charge what they want. Eg.- Govt. sets interest % rate at about 4% and they charge about 8%. Young people have virtually given up any idea of home buying, let alone ownership, despite prices dropping 10% to 20%. Tax rates from 30% to 50% of income. Not much left in the pay packet. I work for myself as a carpenter and since the GFC things have gotten much worse. However, some people make good money - a geologist I know is on $220,000 p.a. and he still seems to run backwards (not sure why other than he bets on the share market). The GFC resulted in huge losses for alot of people with superannuation as it did in the US and Europe. Confidence is pretty shot here. I bought my house in 1983 for $59,000 as a first home buyer and at one point we paid back at 18%. In 2010 same, but renovated, house would have got $1.2million. Bit less now, no complaints. So in the end, a high income earner (not me) is going to pay out 1/2 their income and if they want to live within 10km of the city they have to pay $1+million for a house. It's not hard to manipulate a small population of 22 million people and that's what is happening here. I just dodge the system as much as I can. No credit card helps. But despite all this, great place to live with great bike roads and plenty of space. Got to get rid of that Queen though!!! Cheers.:banghead::banghead::banghead:

If you think real estate is expensive there, never visit where I live. You can't even buy a house within an hour of the major city (Vancouver) for less than $500,000. I live in a small two bedroom house 50km from the city and it is nearly half a mill!

A house in the Vancouver limits is over a million before you tear it down and build a new one because it was a grow operation and uninhabitable. Downtown or any nice area? Better have a million on hand for an apartment that barely fits two. A house downtown? $10,000,000 plus!

I've visited a lot of North America and there's a reason it's so expensive. It's fantastic here.

An Aussie once told me that people back home always like to complain because they're stuck on an island. :) He was probably taking the piss out of me though

That's nice. Thanks for the info on costs in Vancouver re real estate. I'm glad it's fantastic there. I'm not complaining - it's a very, very big island (or is it a continent?) House price I quoted was very basic. Your figures and description sound very similar to here. I'm moving about 50km out to a country town and I'll be paying at least $500,000 for a 3/4 bedroom house. Good thing is I will own it outright and then I can buy some more bikes!!!!

Nah, whatever stats you have are suspect. I lived 5 years in Australia and 3 years in Canada and in my experience Canadians make more money, on average, than an Australian for the same kind of work. Just an observation as a project manager responsible for cost estimates and cost control of big projects so I knew what the prevailing wages were for construction and professional types of people. Of course taxes and other conditions are differerent so you can't say one bunch of people are better off than another. All in all I'd say the quality of living between Oz and Canada is pretty similar, I couldn't pick one over the other in that regard, both are First World countries. Australia suffers from a small market a long way from everywhere, Canada more or less piggybacks off the supply chain of it's neighbor to the south so their prices are more in line with the US.
