Russell/Yamaha Brake Line Install

I stop by the dealer today and without the original packaging they won't take it back. Great, assholes. I guess a receipt doesn't count any more.

So I called Russell and they will make me a custom line, no cost, if I mail the original back to them. If I do this I'll "reinstall" it and take photos of the problem. For a $35.00 part this it turning into a big pain in the butt. I may just order some HELs and be done with it as I really don't have the time to keep messing with this.
 
No problem at all, I don't mind.

I look at it this way, I've gained a ton of knowledge from the forum so if I can give back to the body of knowledge it is my thanks for what I learned. Yeah that's kind of a utopia view but that is what makes a good forum.
 
Did any of you guys have any issues with bleeding the rear brake?

It doesn't seem to matter what I try, the rear brake still feels soft :confused0024:

Are you feeling the mush of the rubber mounts by chance? When I changed to solid mount rear sets both the feel of shifting and the rear brake improved greatly.

As far as bleeding I use a MityVac and I wrap the threads of the bleed screws with Teflon tape. The Teflon tape helps keep air from sucking back into the system as you loosen the bleed screw while bleeding.

I never even thought of that!

I checked another FZ1 at the dealers today and it was the same as mine.....flex in the rubber mount!

Time for new rearsets, I think :jaw drop:

Well if you don't want to (or can't) spend the money on rear sets right now the infamous washer mod will get rid of the vast majority of the flex.
 
I just got my Russel Yamaha lines installed yesterday. I had ordered these before Hellgate had his install issues.

The rear line fit just fine. No issues there.

The banjo bolt up top was a few threads to long. This is the one that came with the kit. Fortunately my local shop had a lathe and was able to machine about 2 threads off the banjo bolt. Nothing to really see here. The cables do look nice.

Now once we get to the bottom up front we start to have problems. First the left side connection is perfectly straight and does not curve towards the forks. The is no way to bend it forward and use the stock bracket. So we went for race track style and zip tied the mofos.

The front right actually fit well but I decided to not use the stock bracket just so that the left and right would somewhat match.

While these lines are going to function perfectly as installed I am not to happy with the aesthetic of the install. Regardless, I am not going to buy new lines for now. I definitely wish I would have gone for Galfer or HEL.

I was told by my local shop that they actually love Russel Yamaha but they really have only done installs in race applications where fit is not that important. With race bikes you just zip tie everything anyway.

Bottom line. If you are not worried about fit and finish they are not a bad idea. They are definitely functional. If you want a show bike (mine was before this, lol) DON'T DO IT!. :)

Now, couldn't those have been separated up top and run down each fork tube? Maybe zip-tied up near the triples so they sort of follow the rear of the tubes down? Perhaps even one zip-tie at the bottom of the outer tube? I just don't know how much give those have.

One of the problems with tying at the bottom of the outer tube is that it is to drastic of a bend in the hose. This is why we could not use the stock bracket. If their fittings bent more towards the forks it would be perfect.
 
After a few misses, I decided to go with HEL lines. Funny thing, the first of lines they sent were too long up front and had the wrong bend angles on the back line. But the guys at HEL (USA) were fantastic and made me a custom set exactly to my measurements... A little pricey, but great customer service over there...
