***Official 2010 Deals Gap Thread*** (Updated OP)

I'm gonna start working on the Food List this evening. I should have a rough sketch in a couple of days.

Here is a shot of what will be following the Cutlass down to Deals Gap. I hope that "45mph" sign is just a precautionary measure! We'll never get there doing 45!

I spoke to my UHaul manager Pat today. He says that we have nothing to worry about exceeding 45mph with this particular trailer. The 45mph sign is simply there because most people renting them have no prior experience in towing anything behind their vehicles. He assured me that the "RT" trailer can pretty much go as fast as your car is traveling safely. He said it's the most stable of all their trailers and is pretty much made specifically to haul bikes. So we are good to go!

Oh that is good news! I was worried that it would take us days to get there at 45 MPH :th_smiley_rotfl2[1]

Guess what? 197 more days!!!

Are we there yet?

Thats funny! I was just thinking about this thread yesterday. Thanks for stirring the pot again Eric. I'm gonna make up the food list tonight and send you a copy.

I was going to stir it up anyway. :D

My friend Joe has yet to commit as that 8th person but Tony has found another rider who wants in. I'm in communications with him now (Thanks Tony!) and this will insure we have the 8 people.

If Joe commits, his funds will be allocated to the groceries as we'd planned for people outside of the original 8. :D

I'm going to search and grab my GPS routes and modify them for the rental as the start/finish point. I'll get them uploaded in the next couple weeks for review. If you all have routes that you've ridden there, please do share!

Gonna be 60 degrees here this weekend! I'll be riding!

Go ahead... rub it in! :drools:

Last year, we came down in May and the weather was perfect but it was also rare according to the locals as it should have been all rain. After speaking with many people, they sold us on Sept, after Labor Day weekend, as being the best time to come. Great weather, most touristy stuff is over, weekends on the dragon are not so busy and week days (when I want to tackle it), the traffic is minimal.

Wish there was some good jobs down that way. I have a 10 yr plan to get out of NH and head somewhere south of Virginia. East TN is a possibility. I have a long time great friend in Ooltewah.

A few more days and we are exactly 6 months away from this trip! :woot:

We have our 8th paid/comfirmed member for the trip. Tony's friend Vadim will be joining us on his FJR! Thanks Tony!

Question for all of you. Any wrenching planned? What would we be working on if there is wrenching? What mods can we do to help thouse who either don't have the technical skills or tools? We can come prepared and help each other out.

Closer still..... ;)

Ok, if Joe (my friend) is coming and pays up, there is the first $166 toward the groceries.

I will have the place paid in full in the next few days. This trip will not be held up by me. You've all paid and need to enjoy this trip even if I cannot make it. Ron at the Treetops will have a complete guest list. I'd like to give him your full names and a cell number so he can verify who is staying when he does come over.

Some have given me their emergency contact information, others have not. Please forward me that information so I can finish the document. All information is strictly confidential.

Thank you all! Looking forward to this in soooo many ways!

I just sent you a PM with all my contact info. I had forgotten to get that info to you a while back :o

As for mods to our bikes, I am pretty handy so don't really need any help other than maybe we should try and set up our suspensions correctly (static sag, etc.). I am willing to help out whoever wants to do some mods while they're there...

Excellent point Tony. Suspension. While I've toyed with mine a bit, I'm sure it isn't set up properly because, I'll be honest, I don't really know the proper way to do this. So, I'm all for someone who *knows* suspension setup on the Gen II to help me out.

I've downloaded the worksheet and read up on it but just have yet to really tackle it. That would come in very handy in the Dragon and Rte 28 as these are two very technical roads.

:D

I wouldn't get to stressed over suspension. I rode with mine @ stock settings for the first year and was fine. The second year was another story! It's really only once you start routinly putting a knee down that the suspension really comes unraveled. Or at least that's how it worked for me.

The Gap is right at my back door. I'll look forward to seeing and meeting you guys! If anyone needs help with anything in the area, let me know and I'll help in any way I can!

Thanks Slyder! Look forward to meeting you also. I don't have to tell you how lucky you are to live where you do. For someone who is an avid rider, it's a dream vacation on a daily basis. I'm sure alot of guys will agree with me on that one!

BEER? :D

Hey, hope you can stop by and meet the gang! Show us some of the good local routes? Do you have any GPS routes already saved you can share?

Thanks! :D

There are plenty of good roads around here that I think are much better than The Gap, Cherohala Skyway for one is a great ride plus you can loop it very easily with The Gap and hwy 360 which is another great road. The Hellbender (hwy 28) is really good and the Devils Triangle (hwy 62 to 330 to 116) are also great and the traffic is much less hectic typically.

I wish I could go, but since the road is blocked, you all might find a slew of other routes to go on instead, and still make it a kick@$$ trip! Maybe next year for me! Hope the rockslide is cleaned up by then!
